Relay for Life is jointly organised by The Cancer Council Victoria and a local volunteer committee. Relay for Life in Geelong occurs at Deakin University Waurn Ponds Campus. It commences 12 noon Saturday 19th March and finishes at 12 noon Sunday 20th March 2011. It is not a race, participants take turns to walk or run around the track. At least one member must be going around the track at all times over the 24 hour period. This can be done individually or in a group. Each team has a batton and this is carried around the track. Each team has an allocated site where we will set up tent/s, shade shelter, chairs, BBQ’s etc. Some people attend for short periods eg 1 hour whether others will stay for the 24 hours (such as team captain.
There is an opening ceremony when The Relay for Life Oath is read and then a countdown signals the start and the Relay begins with the first lap- the survivors and Carers Walk. At dusk there is a candlelight ceremony. This is a time to remember those lost to cancer and to show support for those living with cancer. There is a closing ceremony where the final lap enables. All team members to walk together and reflect on their achievement.
