PRESS RELEASE; 03/01/2011
8 TEAMS, 2 GROUNDS, 1 DAY – Metro footy’s BEST OF THE BEST. Well that’s how it’s been promoted and rest assured, it is what we have on stall. Seven premiership teams from metropolitan Melbourne and The Geelong Football League premiers have agreed to come together on March 6 to answer that very question. Marby parks coach Craig Clinic is pumped about the event “To have this opportunity to represent the EDFL is an honour that many clubs will never get the chance to do. We are excited to put our best up against the rest of Melbourne”. President Michael Cooke from Old Carey said “Old Carey is thrilled to be invited to the day. We are looking forward to stepping into A grade this season for the first time in our clubs history. To have these suburban teams to go up against can only benefit our introduction”. Slightly modified rules and 20 minute halves can allow the teams to have a decent hit out without over exerting themselves to early. Richard Szerszyn, coach of Clayton and League leading goal kicker added “The tournament fixture allows every team the opportunity to play against different teams throughout the day. We can’t wait to go up against the power house sides, it will be a real test.” The event will have a round robin fixture, a semi- final with the four leading teams and a Grand Final to award Melbourne Metro’s BEST of the BEST and the $2000 prize money from Boag’s Draught. Northern Football Leagues A grade premiers West Prestons coach Vince Dattoli has mentioned that this could be one of the most competitive practice matches he has ever coached. He said “Even with the 20/20 format, the buzz from the boys has been electric… I might have to put the brakes as we are only in March!” Teams are representing their leagues on this Blockbuster day and both will get bragging rights for season 2011. Competing on the day will be VAFA – Old Carey (B grade premiers) RDFL – Riddell (A grade premiers) GFL – South Barwon (A grade premiers) WRFL – Albion (A grade premiers) EDFL – Marby Park (A grade premiers) NFL – West Preston (A grade premiers) EFL – Mulgrave (B grade premiers) SFL – Clayton (B grade premiers). Albion’s new coach for 2011, Marcus Spencer will be coaching his first game for the club and can’t wait to pit his talents against the best going around “What a privilege, just a fantastic opportunity”. Geelong Football Leagues CEO Lee Hartman was proud his league was a part of the very first event. “So many clubs are looking for good competition at this time of year, and to have all this talent available on one day is an absolute credit to the organizers.” The day’s events have been organized by Sports management company SPORTS SUPPORT in conjunction with the 2010 hosts the Northern Football League. CT BARLING reserve will be the arena for the day, located on Plenty Road Reservoir starting at 11.00 am. Benjamin Charles, event organizer said “All teams competing have been so helpful and excited by the event. All A grade teams were originally contacted to compete but due to their pre-season commitments not all were available. I am so pleased to have dealt with the clubs competing, they are all 2010 premiers and their management has been exemplary… they are a credit to their clubs and their leagues.” But the event does not stop there. The day will get kicked off by NAB’s AUSKICK and open events will run all throughout the day. A competition to find MELBOURNES FITTEST FOOTBALLER is open to every player registered within Melbourne – Testing will be done by high performance trainer Loris Botticelli in AFL draft camp style to assess who has Melbourne’s highest vertical leap, is quickest over 20Mt’s, can do the most push ups and as a grand final curtain raiser, MELBOURNE’S MAJOR BEEP TEST with one competitor allowed to compete from any club Melbourne wide. All money raised will go to Jim Stynes REACH FOUNDATION. For more details go to www.sportssupport.com.au or call 9509 5776. Corporate partnerships are available.
