NEW BB Cats Board Member, player Taylor Haley, hopes private jets will eventually be introduced to speed up the recovery process from interstate trips.
Hales, who has replaced former player and commentators’ delight, Hamish Dick, in the top role, says there isn't enough room for players to ice down and rest among the general public on domestic flights.
The players' concerns have increased since the AFL axed its long-time deal with Qantas in favour of Virgin Blue. New recruit, the Eagle, has expressed doubts about flying Virgins.
Qantas, according to players, had more leg room in economy class than Virgin Blue and would upgrade bigger and taller players to the more spacious confines of business class. Virgin Blue does not have business class.
The player group was frustrated it was not consulted in the move and has suggested a spare seat be left between players next year to accommodate personal relaxation whims such as X-boxes or St Kilda supporters.
Hales said players deserved better conditions on return flights to ensure they were in the best condition possible for post game amusements and the following week's match.
Some clubs have used chartered Rolls Royce engines to and from Perth in recent years, although the ultimate ambition is to have a safe jet set aside for all clubs.
''Obviously it's only a matter of time. There has to be enough capital to have private jets,'' he said. “The mind boggles in trying to find good reason why the Board has not committed to such a purchase already. It would have been a welcome Christmas gift to the players. Forget the Flying Kangaroo, why can’t Holden knock out a flying version of the Commodore with vertical lift for take-off/landing at the Merrimacattery terminal?
Hales also said a post-career pension for players was on the agenda.
Players could receive a pension when they turn 35 or 40, with the benefits dependant on the number of seasons or matches played. Korey Fulton is believed to be the zealot behind this push. “Plane or pension?” was the response of El Presidente Paul Rolfe.
