Sixteen sessions equating to approximately 24 hours of training time is what the players have participated in since November 16th. To even give ourselves a chance of improving, a strong committed pre Chrismas program was essential. To the delight of all Broadbeach supporters, the players have indicated that they also want change to come to this proud club. We averaged 53 players at each session which included 6am Saturday morning sessions. With 7 new recruits due to arrive in January, a competitive and hungry squad is guaranteed.
In regards to the recruiting process, Geoff Bower has been shadowing most of the available talent around the country since the 2010 season ended. It started with the signing of Jason Eagle and recently ended with Rhan Hooper committing to the club. It has been a great comfort knowing that the board have endorsed Geoff to run the football committee and he has provided an endless amount of support and advice to the coaching staff. No one has played their part more than Geoff when it comes to the changes around the club.
The players should receive praise for their professionalism and attendance at training. It is clear that picking a reserves and senior side this year will be no easy process. Most significantly, players are starting to “get off themselves” and look after each other. Aspects of training have been testing both physically and mentally, and the hard work of Fitness coach Gary Fox has ensured it has been an enjoyable process as well. Gary introduced handicap running events and the final Saturday morning heralded the Cat’s first Ironman series (Fults being the winner).
Standouts at training include Korey Fulton who at age 33, has undergone the most rigorous pre season of his career. Korey was well aware that he would receive no favours this season and had to participate in the sessions as if it were his first. If he chose to play another season, his position was no longer guaranteed. To his credit he has performed very well and subject to a continued effort post xmas there is no reason why Korey could not have his best season in a decade!
Taylor Haley, Nathan Quick and Simon Russell have demonstrated the work ethic required to improve. They were frequently sighted doing extra sessions at the club on the off nights. More players need to heed this example. Worthy of note as well, are Daniel Jameson, Sam Robertson and James Fitzgerald who have been the stars of the running track. It has also been good to see some positive signs from Dayne Zorko. The bar has been raised considerably for this young talent and so far he is meeting the challenge – improvement from everyone is essential.
Tim Searl and Reserves coach Lloyd Briggs have made significant contributions. Tim’s knowledge of football on the coast is unsurpassed and together with Lloyd’s passion for helping the players improve, a solid, committed coaching foundation is evident. We look forward to having two exciting new assistants commence after Christmas.
There is no question that an exciting and eager energy exists in the football club at the moment. Nothing is permanent and only continual improvement and a strong desire to take responsibility after Christmas will ensure positive results and outcomes. I sincerely hope everyone associated with the club has a terrific and safe 3 weeks rest or celebration (however you handle the festive period) and look forward to continuing the hard work in the new year.
