The Cats rigorous pre-season training session saw the playing squad head to The Spit on Saturday morning for a leisurely ‘stroll”. Fitness Coach Gary Fox had planned a gentle 4km run around the parkland and dune vegetation opposite the Seaworld entry. It’s fair to say that there was significantly more chasing going on than jumping steeples!
A group of over 40 set off for a 1.8km jog around the course as a familiarization that got the hearts racing at the 6am start.
After the warm up lap, fitness coach and chief handicapper Foxy set the group off at intervals depending on ranking & potential. The first group set off with a handy break followed by a further 4 groups who all gave the front runners a combination of distance and time as a head start. After the first lap, the majority of light weights (to use a racing term) had their lead whittled away with the scratch markers (top weights) making good ground and setting themselves up for a rush to the line.
In the end it was the blokes who gave away time and distance that triumphed with Daniel Jamieson coming home in first place ahead of Sam Robertson with Tom Hansen putting in a big effort for third (got under the handicappers guard!). Another back marker in Fitzy was close behind in 4th place
Foxy reports that the weight-for-age division of the race was won by Korey Fulton (carrying the equivalent of 65kgs at his age)!
In other training news, we can report that the Broadbeach 1km record was broken last Thursday by Ash Palmer (2min 50sec). Foxy was ready with CPR after he crossed the line. Great effort Ash!
This Thursday, the inaugural 3km time trial will be held at Pizzey Park. Foxy’s pick is for Robbo to win with a scintillating time of 9min. 55sec. The best outsider bet is Tink - he has been trained to the 'minute' and is set to peak for this race - great value. If you have an account with any decent sports bookmaker you should be able to get on! If not, ring Brendan Fevola – we hear he may have contacts!
If you are interested in seeing how the boys are shaping up (and we have to say that they are in the best pre season shape since Noah was building his boat!), we invite you to get along to Merrimac Oval on Tuesday. Training is at the Cattery on Tuesday night
