Cats Swoop on Eagle
The Broadbeach Cats has fired the first shot in the 2011
recruiting stakes with the announcement that key full forward Jason Eagle
has signed with the Gold Coast Club for 2011.
Eagle this year played for Shepparton United in the
Goulburn Valley League in Victoria
where his enormous talent was evident kicking 99 goals for the Premiership
Team. In a stellar year, he represented Goulburn Valley
at full forward where he kicked 4 goals against the strong Ovens &
Murray squad for the title of strongest Victorian Country Competition.
Eagle has experienced QAFL State League previously when
he played for Redlands
in 2009 kicking 80 goals. In 2008, Eagle played for Cairns Saints where he
kicked 111 goals.
290 goals over the past three years at an average of
just over 5 goals per game, is a compelling reason why Eagle has been in
the the sights of AFL Clubs throughout Australia.
The fact that Broadbeach was able to pull of this
recruiting coup is a shot in the arm for the Gold Coast Club and a
reinforcement of the Club's commitment to restructuring its football
department.
"I spoke with quite a few clubs but I was keen to
get back to Queensland
and play in the State League," Eagle said. "I was impressed with
the restructure that’s going on at Broadbeach, their attitude toward
changing culture, their young talent and an opportunity to be part of an
exciting chapter in the Club's history", Eagle said.
In 2010, Broadbeach was competitive against most clubs
and enjoyed a win over eventual 4th placed Mt Gravatt and led premiers
Morningside deep into the fourth quarter at their home ground at Merrimac
Oval later in the year.
For a team blessed with young talent, the recruitment of
Eagle is the first of many key positional signings that the Club plans to
make for 2011.
Broadbeach is soon set to announce their new Coach for
2011 following the departure of Adrian Smith after two years at the helm.
Off the field, Broadbeach has recruited the
well respected and experienced Fitness Coach Gary Fox to its team.
'Foxy' was the inaugural Fitness Coach to the Brisbane Bears team in the
AFL under Peter Knights in 1987 and his presence will have a significant impact
on the fitness of the 2011 team.
Change is certainly in the air at Broadbeach with a
number of other key recruits set to be announced over the next few weeks.
