Seniors
Second bottom? Nah. Competitive. Equal eighth
just off the pace with a victory by 49 points over the Vultures, last year’s
premiers and this season’s fourth (and still going). We had a good win over the
Maggies – as all good football followers like to see – when Tinka picked up the
lazy 12 sausage rolls, and twice we came home with the bacon against the Lions.
Our biggest winning margin for the season was 92 points in round 7 over the
Western Magpies.
That game classified the team as
‘hot’ - sharing the goal kicking were 8 players: from Fults with 5 to Tinka
with 1, but we went on to record a number of frustrating losses. To Redlands by 6 and 17 points; a
reputable result in going down to the minor premier Labrador by 22 points at
their dung heap; and a hard fought 31 point loss to Morningside. A loss to
Aspley in a dead rubber may have conceivably been a win had earlier games gone
our way. They might all have been wins had injuries and fickle fate not
interrupted the plot.
However, it’s fair to say that the
best five got through the home and away games. In a couple of wipe outs we were
about as effective as a knitted condom, losing out by 142 and 106 points to the
Thunder and the gorgeous Southport respectively. We are informed
that the back and forward lines had their feet in different postal zones against
the Thunder.
It has been a fair ride with
tongues hanging out up until round 14 when we still had a realistic go at
playing finals footy and round 16 at which point we still had a mathematical
chance of the snowflake surviving in hell.
A few stats (based on Footyweb data
which is limited and can be found on the website results page):
· We fielded 45 players for
the season.
· Our list features players
from Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, WA and NSW (one SUNs from the sup list
hails from SA)
· The Rolfe family accounted
for 6.7% of the players list.
Throw in El Presedente and passionate supporters Andrea, Lois and Gizmo and one
understands why we are the family community club
- Korey Fulton applied for an age pension
· Seven listed Suns gave us 32
games for the season and made the ‘best’ 7 times.
· Nineteen players recorded
double figure game totals.
· Tinka headed the goal
kicking with 32, followed by Fults on 31 and Cookie on 30.
· On goal averages Liam
Patrick gave us 4 per game (2 games) and Fults kicked in with 2.4 per game (13
games)
· Biggest bag of the season
was Tink’s 12 and Fults brought up his gazillionith career goal
· Tinka figured amongst the
best six 11 times followed by Searly on 9, R-Pants on 8, Quickie on 7 and a
bunch that included the usual suspects Fifey, Rhino, Stewie, Aza and JD.
· We scored 212 goals 197
behinds for the season and conceded 268 goals 239 behinds letting the opposition in for 20+ goals on 4
occasions.
- For the season we scored 80.1% of opposition total, while for rounds 1 - 9 (Darin Stewart at centre half back) we scored at a rate of 98.6% of opposition totals.
· Our highest scoreline was 20
goals 12 behinds in round 10 against the Maggies; the lowest was 4 goals 8
behinds that Southport let us in for in round 12
· Round 10 was the only game
we notched 20 majors
· Without reference to
umpiring stats we estimate we gave away about 30 fifty metre plus gift goals
There are a few pluses to ponder.
· Searly, Quickie, Squiz and
Cookie – all teenagers last year – strung together the max of 18 games. None
were regulars in 2009 (Squiz was at GC17) {Adam Oehlman, the Ox, also a
teenager, totalled the max of 18 with 10 in the twos and 8 in the seniors}
· Eight under 18s were regular
players
· Of the 45 who ran onto the
deck, 17 are in the 19 – 21 age group and only 7 of the 45 have in excess of 50
career game totals (Four of those - Tinka, Rhino, Nat Lyons and Stewie - reached
that milestone this season; JD is on 84 - a grand total for one so young - and Fults and Stalk are over the 150)
· While 45 indicates some
instability and forced changes at the selection table, our back and centre
lines were pretty much the same trust and form worthy on a week-to-week basis
· Tinka, Quickie, Searly,
Cookie, Stewie and JD all played representative football
· One of our number (Joel
Wilkinson) will attend the AFL draft camp
· With the greatest respect,
we have, as do other sides in the QAFL, footballers to challenge SUNs listed
players.
· One of the co-captains is a
swannies supporter
· The under 12s, 14s, and 16s
are in Grand finals
· In addition to the 8 under
18 regulars in the firsts, on our count 17 on the under 18 list and 2 under
16s, played in the Magoos
· Jesse Derrick is like a
great bottle of red
· The Management Committee has
a new guard who are not hung. We understand that all, apart form the honourable
Treasurer who has done a remarkable job at risk of alienating his young family,
have put up the hand for another season. These are truly competent and football
wise people who already have new structures in place to streamline football
operations. And importantly, are plotting to consolidate the gains made
off-field, in particular, the Grassroots Luncheon and strategic alliances.
Magoos
The Magoos or more reverently the
twos, had an eventful season.
· Footyweb records a
staggering seventy two (72) players wearing the Cats jumper in the early games.
· Only 10 players totalled 10
or more games
· Two of that number - Jason Frawley and Sam Robertson - put in 17 games in outstanding
efforts of loyalty, perseverance and mental fortitude
· They were assisted by Matt
Henneker (15), James Fitzgerald (12 plus 4 in the seniors), Tyler Green (11),
Tom Clough (11), Jai Simunek (11), Adam Oehlman (10 plus 8 in the seniors),
Mitch Kavich and Kev Jubb (10 each).
· The Twos recorded one win
for the season defeating Redlands at home – in dramatic sense of timing - in
the penultimate round Broadie 13 8 86 to Redlands 12 5 77

Officials
We are blessed by a number of souls who turn up week
after week and make contributions of an indispensable worth on match day. We
are indebted to Greg Arthur; Simon Littlechild; Dale Perkins; Ray, Joy and
Travis Johnson; Ian Spackman; Tim Searl and Bryan Wilkinson who fulfilled roles
as timekeepers, runners, interchange stewards and team managers. Please let us
know if your name has not been mentioned – it should be.
Others have manned BBQs, waited on tables, set up
rooms, dispensed canteen goodies, organized fund raisers, served on committees,
and whatever had to be done.
These inputs are demanded by all teams and we are
unfortunately and apologetically not aware of all those who respond. Perhaps
there are officials reading this who can supply the names of those in the under
18s, Twos and Seniors who give freely of their time. We would like to
publically acknowledge their efforts.
And the
players. Each week you provided us with the ups and downs of footy;
with exhibitions of skill, courage, team and individual brilliance, and
a communal character. We appreciate what you do for yourselves and us.
Thanks for the ride in 2010.
Finally, when we are forced back to the polls,
approach your member and ask what they will do for the Broadbeach Footy Club.
It is as good a reason as any to cast a vote for freedom.
