The Westside Asphalt Western Magpies U/18’s many of whom suffered a heart breaking loss by 1 point to Morningside in 2009 will be hell bent on redemption when the face Redland in the 2010 Sports Ready U/18 Division 1 Grand Final at Graham Rd Aspley at 2pm on Sunday. Motivation won’t be hard to find for the young Magpies who have been the best team in the competition for two seasons but it will stand for little if they don’t get their hands on the silver ware.
To win the ultimate prize Des Lashman’s boys will have to overcome a rampaging Redland Bombers outfit that has won 10 of its last 11 games to make the Grand Final. Following their round 7 defeat by Sandgate the Bombers were eighth on the ladder but since then won 7 out of 8 to finish 4th and have won 3 finals to earn their right to challenge the Magpies for the Premiership.
The Magpies have won 9 of their last 11 and will be much the fresher than the Bombers who have played every week since the July 24 bye whilst the Magpies have had only 2 games in 7 weeks. Which team benefits from their opposing preparations won’t be known until 4pm on Sunday.
Although the Bomber won the only encounter between the two teams by 36 points it was the Magpies worst performance in 2010 when they did not turn up to play and will have little bearing on the Grand Final.
Regardless of the preparations and history the Magpies are chock full of outstanding talent of which no less than 8 players have played Senior QAFL games this year with the Brisbane Lions and the Western Magpies or both. At least another 3 have played for the Western Magpies Reserves and nearly all of the played in the U/18 State Championships. This group has had more than enough top quality football the prepare for the ultimate battle.
Look for young Dylan McDonald who has been outstanding all year to get his hands on the ball first delivering to an all star midfield of Tom Eilasi, Jake Fuentes, James Scarce, Patrick Monty, Stuart Wenham and the wielding left foot of Allan Borchardt. Bryce Crossley will lead the defense strongly with Jesse Hampel, Lachy Woods-Honour and Mitchell Oates while Tim Colburn will provide the run and carry and will deliver the ball forward with class.
The Magpies will have plenty of goal power with Jake Knight, Bernhard Seir and Alex Dickfos providing the tall targets up forward with James Scarce and Tony Flynn deadly of the ground when resting forward. Daniel Frame is a huge asset that can play anywhere on the ground as can Brady Thomas and Jack Green.
Good luck boys!!
