The Greater Western Sydney team will enter the AFL
National competition in 2012. Next year there is the possibility of GWS
becoming part of the local competition that includes Sydney Swans
reserves and the Canberra teams. To ensure this happens GWS are after a
pledge of support from local Canberra supporters.
The
Ainslie Football Club is right behind the push to get GWS into Canberra
and encourage all supporters to pledge their support to GWS.
Ainslie
Social Club President Malcolm Scholes and Football Club President Ian
Muir would like to send the following message to all Ainslie supporters
and members.
"The ACT has been provided a unique opportunity to partner with the AFL’s 18th team – Greater Western Sydney (GWS) for live AFL matches to be played in the ACT from 2012.
This
partnering opportunity will deliver 4 matches per season (1 pre-season
and 3 in-season matches) for the next 10 years and through this enrich
the ACT region, grow participation numbers and assist AFL to compete
more effectively with the other professional football codes.
This
partnering opportunity requires that 5000 Canberran’s get behind the
GWS by pledging their support. As it currently stands, we have about
1,000 pledges with little over 6 weeks remaining. If you support AFL,
then you can directly influence AFL being played here in the ACT by
pledging your support for this initiative.
As
an organization that has the fostering of AFL development at its
constitutional heart, we are appealing to all members and supporters
who have an interest in AFL Football to get behind this bid to secure
AFL football being played in this region. There are significant
benefits to the game and the local economy, being:
- Regional AFL supporters will travel to Canberra to watch AFL content and thus drive economic benefit to the ACT;
- GWS will play up to 40 games in Canberra over the next 10 years
- AFL in Canberra and the region will have a seat on the GWS board
- GWS will continue to invest in local talent academies
- GWS will establish a training base in Canberra and the region
- GWS will conduct community camps in the region
-
GWS will field a team in the AFL Canberra competition or in a second
tier AFL competition that will feature Canberra clubs.
The
opportunity for the AFL community of ACT to join GWS has been described
as the game’s best and last chance to establish a meaningful presence
in the region.
This
is our opportunity to become a significant part of our national game.
It’s our time. Let’s secure our national game for our national capital
region. You don’t have to be a GWS Supporter to support this
initiative. I am a St Kilda supporter and Ian Muir is a Carlton
supporter, however we are both AFL supporters too!
By
kicking your $50 to secure the future of AFL in the region, you will
also be given the chance to secure one of only 2500 undercover priority
seats when Team GWS plays at Manuka Oval. You can have the same seat,
every game, every year."
