VFL Round 18
In the final home and away game for season 2010, Port Melbourne played bottom side Frankston at Teac Oval on Saturday.
From the first bounce it was evident that the Borough was keen to continue on the form they showed in the previous week against Geelong.
Port’s Shane Valenti kicked the opening goal for match which was followed closely by 3 consecutive goals to full forward Dean Galea.
Galea was on song early and a feature of his play was his clean hands and deadly goal kicking.
With Nathan Batsanis (2) and Cory McGrath (1) also getting on the scoreboard, it was all Port Melbourne in the opening term. At the first break Port had a very healthy 27 point lead.
The second term saw a total dominance from the Port Melbourne side. Playing some of there most free flowing and clinical football of the year, the Borough slammed on 9 goals for the quarter to basically kill the game.
Port’s Dan Keely chipped in with 2 goals while Dean Galea kicked 3 more for the term to go into half time with a bag of 6 to his name. Port had winners all over the ground and the dolphins simply didn’t have any answers.
Half time scores were Port Melbourne 16.5.101 to Frankston 2.4.16.
Amazingly the third quarter saw both sides kick 2 goals. Port peppered the goals and was well on top in general play but 10 behinds marred there play but also saved Frankston from total embarrassment.
Only Seb Hendersen and David Fanning could kick truly.
Port’s running players in Johnston, Bentick, Cain and Batsanis were superb and running rampant all over Teac Oval. The Borough defence, were well on top with reliable defender Sam Pleming again leading the way.
Last quarter rain slowed up Port’s scoring but 5 goals to 2 made sure Port finished the day winning all 4 quarters on there way to a massive 116 point win.
Young Henderson kicked 2 goals in the final term with singles to Martin, Bonaddio and Dwyer.
Port Melbourne finishes the season in 4th position and now plays 1st placed Williamstown in a blockbuster qualifying final at Box Hill on Saturday August 28 from 2pm.
The Borough will be quietly confident that if they can produce there best football, they can cause a major upset much like they did in the 2008 preliminary final against the Seagulls. This match is set to be one of the biggest games of the season.
The Port Melbourne Football Club urges all its members and supporters to head out to Box Hill in big numbers to show your support for Gary Ayres and his team.
See you all Saturday
