North Brunswick's reserves finals campaign has gotten off to the start we wanted with a 29 point win against South Mornington at Vermont park.
A sunny day with a bit of breeze around was the setting, and winning the toss gave North Brunswick the advantage of the breeze in the first term. The pressure was on early, with a fast and furious encounter seeing the ball bounce from end to end quickly without too much scoring early on. Shane Hamilton then broke the deadlock and North Brunswick were away - kicking the first three goals of the match to lead 3.3 to 0.3 at Quarter time.
The second quarter became even more free flowing - with South Mornington piling on 6 goals to North's 4 - leaving North Brunny with a 5 point lead at half time. Coach Abe Kyriazis asked the boys for their best effort after half time - and for everyone to lift. Only one goal a piece in the third quarter had the game very evenly poised, with the North Brunswick defence standing tall and repelling a wave of South Mornington attacks. Dave Allan was beginning to gain some ascendency in the ruck, and despite being only 5 points ahead - and kicking into the breeze for the last quarter - the team was optimistic and felt our fitness could get us there.
The last quarter saw North Brunswick surge forward from the centre, with Hall, Ackland and Gussy Selaidinakos getting first hands on the ball. Twaddle, Hamilton, Makdessi and Fleming kicked important goals and a 5 goal to 1 quarter gave North Brunswick the desired result - by 29 points.
Top of the ladder - Monash Gryphons, await North Brunswick in the second semi final - this Saturday, 11:40am at Vermont Park. It was great to see many North Brunswick supporters at the qualifying final, we would love to see many more faces there this weekend to help us along in what will be a huge game.
