TERRITORY Thunder's sharpshooter Darren Ewing points to
luck and positioning as reasons for playing every game in the QAFL
club's 35-game history.
Ewing, who works as a plumber with local firm Quality Plumbing and
Building Contractors in his spare time, has booted 144 goals for
Thunder.
He won the prestigious Ray Hughson Medal in his first season when he led the QAFL goalkicking with 80 majors.
This year he trails Southport's Cleve Hughes by seven goals going into the last round.
He hopes a big haul against Broadbeach on Saturday can help secure him back-to-back medals.
The
former Victorian and quicksilver Tiwi Islands flanker Bradley
Palipuaminni are the only Thunder players to reach the 35-game mark.
"I've been a bit lucky with injury. I get a bit sore after games but that's it," he said.
"I'm lucky I'm at full forward I suppose and not getting smashed around every week like the midfielders."
Ewing
and his teammates could be forgiven for thinking Groundhog Day has come
a year after their pursuit of an inaugural finals berth ended in
disappointment.
One year ago Thunder had to beat Aspley by a big margin and rely on sides above them losing to make the finals.
Only a one-point win is required over a struggling Broadbeach in Saturday's final home-and-away game.
"Our destiny is in our own hands," he said.
Ewing's feats at full forward include winning the Dennis Dunn leading goalkicker award with Palmerston in the NTFL.
Ewing wants another 2000-strong crowd at Gardens Oval on Saturday to act as an honourable 19th man.
"It helped us a lot last week."
