The Westside Asphalt Western Magpies U/18’s qualified for the 2010 Sports Ready U/18 Division 1 Grand Final on Sunday with a nail biting 1 point win over their closest rivals Noosa Tigers 10.9.69 to 10.8.68. The Magpies appeared to be in control at ¾ time with a 14 point lead but not having played for a month took its toll with several Magpies battling cramp to hold on as the Tigers charged home with the wind in the last quarter.
Dylan McDonald got the Magpies off to a good start getting his hands on the ball first in the ruck and Jake Fuentes started the game brilliantly winning plenty of football. The quarter was an even affair with the defense of both teams standing up and rebounding the ball well. A goal from Tony Flynn after the quarter time siren ignited the Magpies and gave them the momentum going into the second quarter.
The Magpies started the second quarter as they finished the first as Bryce Crossley provided plenty of run and carry from the half back line delivering the ball inside 50. Brenton Saunders was also winning plenty of ball through the middle of the ground and Alex Dickfos, Tony Flynn and James Scarce all notched up majors for the young Magpies. The Magpies were more accurate than the Tigers and kicked 3.1 to 1.3 to take a 16 point lead into half time.
With a Grand Final berth on the line both teams came out firing in the third quarter which provided some outstanding football as both teams went goal for goal. The Magpies looked like blowing the game open when they kicked two goals in two minutes midway through the quarter but the Tigers kept coming. The Tigers were more accurate overall kicking 5.1 to the Magpies 4.4 but there were danger signs as a number of Magpies players began to cramp up.
The final term was and epic battle as Magpie players continued to be hampered by cramping and the Noosa players sniffed victory with a strengthening breeze at their backs. The Magpies fatigue was manifested in skill errors as well as cramping and the Tigers were on the charge. Alex Dickfos kicked his fourth goal to steady the Magpies with their only goal for the quarter but the Tigers kept coming. Noosa kicked the last of their goals from a turn over from a Magpies kick in and a frenzied battle for the last few minutes culminated in the final siren and a 1 point victory to the Magpies.
Noosa will play Redland in a Preliminary Final next weekend to see who will meet the Magpies in the Grand Final on August 29.
