The Tweed Coast Tigers have taken the Summerland League to a
new level by systematically taking apart the reigning premiers in an ominous
sign for the upcoming finals.
Fielding their best side so far this season the Tigers put
on a show for their last home game at Tigerland Pottsville, dominating the
Magpies across the park and wining by a massive 20 goals in front of another great home crowd.
For the second time in two weeks the Tigers came out of the
blocks all guns blazing and took a big lead into the wind at the first break.
The Tigers had plenty to play for with the passing of the
Coach’s Mother and Roundys Grandmother during the week, as a sign of respect
the Tigers wore black armbands to commemorate the sad loss.
The return of giant ruckman strope was also the catalyst for
a big game for the Tigers and the onballers ran riot out of the middle to
produce a ridiculous 48 scoring shots for the game.
The Magpies had turned up with probably the strongest team
so far this season and looked ready to roll, showing glimpses that they could
be title contenders this season, but failed to match the Tigers intensity for
four quarters. The second and third quarters were more hotly contested but a
rousing address by Roundy at 3 quarter time ensured the Tigers put their foot
to the floor and ran a muck in the final term with the wind to hand Byron what
would have to be close to their biggest loss ever in the clubs proud 25 year
history.
From the backs to the forwards the Tigers were hard at the
ball and well disciplined in sticking to the game plan. Special mentions for
Roundy who played one of his best matches so far this season kicking 6 goals
and providing a daunting task for the Magpies defenders, Timmy at fullback who
took the mark of the season so far (only to have Pepe play on and take the
kick), Ash, Arnold, Johno, Bones and Jai who all had big contributions from the
middle and Big Strope who returned from injury to dominate the ruck over his
arch rival and one of the best players in the comp Floyd and take out the prestigious
Tigers players player award.
A big thanks to Les who in the absence of Club President Col,
took up the game day organizational logistics and did a fantastic job. Also the
ladies of the club including Judy, Pat, Sue, Mandy, Lee, Rachel, Nic and Em
whose fine baking skills and raffle ticket selling helped raise valuable
revenue for our fledgling club. Also thanks to Tony, Tim, Mark, Lucy, Dave and
all the other volunteers who contribute their time each week.
With eyes now heading towards the Major Semi on the 28th
August at Oakes Oval Lismore, things are hotting up for positions in the side, with
no injuries on the weekend and the return of Jimmy, Benny and Wilson, its gonna
be a tough task for Shags to select his finals squad.
Next weekend sees the final round for the year and the
Tigers will take on Nimbin at Round Mountain.
