NOR-WEST JETS MATCH REPORT ROUND 16
The Nor-West Jets faced Sydney Uni at H.J Mahony Park in Marrickville on Sunday, in a
critical battle for 4th spot on the Division 2 ladder. With the late
withdrawal of Jake Berry due to a skiing accident, the Jets faced a big task to
topple the Students, who called on their massive playing list and utilised the
services of Geelong scholarship player Kale Temple
and Sydney
veteran Lee Campbell, who has plied his trade in Premier Division since 1989.
The home side made the most of the great conditions in the
first quarter, thwarting many Jets attacking moves ad setting up their running
game early, as they added 5 goals to two in the first term. Paul Sherwood and
John Dowl gave good options for the Jets, whilst dual rucks Paul Webster and Andrew Travers did some damage around the park. Jack
Pascoe was given the job of curbing Campbell’s
influence in defence, while Owen Butcher played on the wing like a dog with
rabies.
The second term is one the Jets would rather forget, kept
scoreless while Sydney Uni added two more. Ben Cain played a tight game on his
dangerous opponent, while Brendan Cameron and Chris Graf used the ball
effectively. With a 27 point deficit at half time, the Jets needed to pull out
some magic in the next term.
Webster at full forward proved hard to stop, with 3 goals in
a heroic display, as the Jets got a slight sniff of a win, however, the
Students added a critical goal from broken play and headed to the final break
with a handy 27 point margin.
The Jets kicked the first goal of the term, and hopes were
high that a victory was attainable, but the Students tightened up their
defence, and added two of their own, to run out 30 point winners and secure 4th
spot for another week.
Sydney Uni 12.7-79 to Nor-West 7.7-49.

In reserve grade action, the 8th placed Jets
faced off against last placed Holroyd-Parramatta on the pristine Gipps Road
surface on Saturday, and with regular Seniors midfielder Jarod Thomson starting
in the middle, were confident of a strong victory.
The Goannas started well,
kicking the first goal of the game, however, this only stirred the hungry Jets
into action, with only inaccuracy stopping a first quarter massacre, scoring 4
goals 5 behinds. Nick Milkins was providing a strong target at centre half
forward, clearly inspired by the visiting Moscow Circus as he leapt about like
a trapeze artist. Strong ruck work by Matt Brophy and Scott
Allan around the ground gave first use of the ball to Mick
Yee, in a rare magoo’s appearance, Chris Collins and Steve Chase, while Brock
Gibson was dominant off half back.
Worse scoring in the second, with a wasteful
8 behinds, saw the Jets head to the rooms with a 48 point margin, but knew the
gutsy Goannas would come out angry. The Goannas must be credited with their
intense tackling pressure all day, as they shut the Jets down on many
occasions.
Coach Kyle set a target in the second half and the Jets
responded to the challenge, kicking 6 goals and 8 more behinds in the third to
put the game out of Parra’s reach.
Daniel Graham was a focal point up forward,
kicking 4 goals, while Dan Harding crumbed well to pick up 2 stunning goals,
and when co-captain Norm Hanley
kicked truly for his 1st of the season, the Jets started to have
some fun. The defence of Mat Laurence, Ryan Bowen and big man Hank Scorpio, who
linked up well off half back and even snapped himself a freakish goal, should
be congratulated on keeping the Goannas to only 2 goals for the match in a
miserly display.
Best on Ground Pete Richardson was sublime on the wing,
setting up countless attacking moves, as the Jets did as they pleased, piling
on 7 goals and tightened up their inaccuracy with 5 behinds, to record a
powerful 139 win.
Nor-West 21.26-152 to Holroyd-Parramatta 2.1-13.
