SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 12-17-89 def LILYDALE 10-16-76
On a very wet ground the boys again showed determination to come from behind at ¾ time. There was great excitement after the match as news came through that Croydon had lost and we were back in the 5. We meet Blackburn and Sth Croydon in our last 2 matches. Mark Cullen created a 50 year old club record playing his 249th senior game. There were 2 changes with Papillo out injured and Dore returning to the reserves – Frankish and Tim Johnson came in. Webster again played in the reserves and kicked 7 goals from a forward flank. Debney returned after a broken finger and McKernan showed glimpses of last years form. Good news for the seniors next week with Rushton returning after a broken hand.
The early signs were good with Greig kicking the first goal followed by Bardon and Siciliano. When Froud goaled we led by 19 points but there was a turning point in the quarter with Lilydale getting on top. They peppered inside 50 for the last 10 minutes and it was apparent it was not going to be easy. They missed some easy shots but kicked the last 2 goals of the term as we led at ¼ time 4-2 to 3-5.
They cold have buried us in the second quarter kicking 3-8 to 3-1 but we hung in there. Goals came from Henley via Greig, Griffiths with a snap and Froud. At half time they led 6-13 to 7-3. Better players for the half were Millhouse, Cotchett, Kelly, Mullett and Bardon.
After ½ time it was our turn to be inaccurate – from our next 16 scoring shots we kicked 2-14. Henley goaled to give us the lead but Lilydale added the next 3 to give us something to chase. Ross was good in the ruck while Millhouse was good down back and Henley controlled his wing with strong marks. Cotchett goaled on the siren as we got within 4 points – Lilydale 9-15 to 9-11.
In the last quarter with hit the front kicking 6 behinds. We finally shook them off in the last 10 minutes as we found the goals for a change. Goals came from Cotchett, Froud and a Wembley soccer goal by Bardon – it was another fighting win from behind. Better players for the half were Henley, Cotchett, Mullett, Siciliano, Ross, Mendes and Millhouse.
Goalkickers – Froud 3, Cotchett 2, Bardon 2, Henley 2 with singles to Siciliano, Griffiths and Greig.
Best Players – Henley, Cotchett, Millhouse, Mullett, Mendes, Siciliano, Kelly in the 1st half and Ross in the 2nd half.
Possessions – Henley 37 with 13 marks, Cotchett and Mullett 32, Bardon 27, Siciliano 25, Mendes 24, Millhouse 22 and Spriggs 20.
1% - Mendes 11, Mullett, Millhouse and McCarthy 10 each with Ross 9.
Coach’s Comments - It was credit to the group that they fought the game out. We have a big week before us preparing for Blackburn.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 36-20-236 def LILYDALE 4-3-27
The scoreline tells it all – we had a host of good players – McInerney with his 10 goals – Webster seems more comfortable playing up forward and bagged 7. Stewart played a good first half – Cameron was probably best on ground while Rogneda was prominent. McKernan in his 3rd game for the season started to show glimpses of his senior form from last year. Jarrod Bird was good in defence and kicked a rare goal. Bull and Jones continued their good form of last week
Goalkickers – McInerney 10, Webster 7, Jones 2, Ellis 2, Dore 2, Bordin 2 and McKernan 2 with singles to Stewart, Rogneda, Romas, Debney, McDonald, Carrodus, Cameron, J.Bird and Humphrey.
Coach’s Best Players – McInerney, Webster, Bull, Rogneda, Stewart, Carrodus and Cameron.
Coach’s Comments – Everything about the win was fantastic and I deserve breakfast in bed every day this week.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
LILYDALE 9-11-65 def VERMONT 5-11-41
Another capitulation against a top side. It was the battle between 2nd and 3rd on the ladder. The Eagles played better in the 1st quarter with goals from McAuley and Castersen. At ¼ time we led 2-2 to 1-3.
Checkley kicked 2 goals in the 2nd term an applied a great tackle. We led by 11 points but Lilydale made a charge late in the quarter with the last 4 scoring shots. Luckily they were inaccurate booting 1-6 for the term. At half time we led 4-5 to 2-9. Better players for the half were McAuley, Checkley, Lawlor, Woolard and Castersen.
After the break Lilydale kicked 3 goals in 4 minutes and we were under siege. Late in the term Yousef goaled via Pretto and at ¾ time they led 5-9 to 5-8.
They dominated the final quarter booting 4 goals to nil and won comfortably in the finish. They were quicker, more physical and handled the wet conditions better. Better players for the half were Woolard, Johns, McAuley and Lawlor.
Goalkickers – Checkley 2 with singles to McAuley, Castersen and Yousef.
Coach’s Best Players – McAuley, Checkley, McCullough, Rodwell and Cooper.
Coach’s Comments – It was disappointing – we are right back in the pack. We couldn’t match their intensity in the last quarter – there was no forward pressure to keep the ball in.
