The Tradelink Western Magpies battled hard at Frankhouser Reserve on Saturday against Southport but were no match for the slick Sharks who ran out 22.20.152 to 7.6.48 winners. The Sharks after 3 losses would have been mindful of not letting the Magpies gain some confidence early with a good start. They blew the Magpies away with 7.3 to 0.3 in the first quarter making a strong statement from the outset.
The Sharks continued their dominance in the second quarter but were wasteful in front of goal kicking 5.8 while the Magpies battled against a rampant opposition to have 3 shots and registered 1 goal. The Magpies as they have done most of the season steeled themselves in the second half and kept fighting preventing a potential flogging kicking 3.0 to 5.5 in the third and 3.1 to 5.4 in the last quarter.
James Rozynski was once again the Magpies best although he was tagged by 200 gamer Adam Devine and as has been the case most season Ed McDonnell was once again tireless in his work across half forward including kicking a goal. When looking for positives Jarrod Thorpe would be keen to point to the rise and rise of Hayden Thick who dominated the centre bounces all day and continued to contribute around the ground. Thick stepped up as Gerard Moore was restricted in his centre bounce work with ruminants of a cork from the week prior.
Greg Friis continued his good recent form gaining plenty of possessions and working hard on the wing while debutant Alex Dickfos showed plenty presenting and marking across half forward and finishing with a goal. Cameron Mitchelhill continued his return to form doing a good job on Ben Merritt who he was able to keep goalless.

The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves came up against a Southport side laden with regular Senior players after Craig Crowley wielded the axe and in a similar trend to the Seniors the Sharks started emphatically. Southport dominated the first quarter with the aid of a strong breeze and dominated the centre clearances to kick 5.6 to the Magpies 0.1.
The Magpies went in at quarter time looking for their opportunity to kick with the wind and although they were more competitive around the ground and did generate scoring shots they were wasteful in front of goal. Southport managed 3.3 against the wind in a much more even contest while the Magpies wasted an opportunity to get back into the game kicking 1.5 to take a 45 point deficit into the long break.
Southport once again stamped their dominance on the game in the third quarter kicking 4.5 to 1.2 with the breeze effectively shutting the Magpies out of the game. The Magpies came out in the last quarter showing the type of football they can play kicking 4.2 to 1.4 to save some pride and take some positives into Morningside next week.
Blake McClennan was the Magpies best through the middle all day while Dom Beer in the ruck continued his good form and Mat Mitchell made a contribution on the wing. As always Reid Dobson worked his guts out and both Jason Evans and Scott Clarke worked tirelessly at half forward.
