Mac Uni Warriors 5.5.35 Defeated By UTS 11.10.76
The Warriors took on UTS in a top of the table clash at home on Saturday night under lights. Both sides were keen to win this one with UTS looking to virtually wrap up the minor premiership and the Warriors eyeing a top 3 spot and double chance in the finals.
In our last meeting UTS jumped to a 6 goal lead inside 20mins and our aim to be switched on from the first minute worked well with the side down by 2 goals at quarter time. If we had of executed our foot skills like we discussed prior to the game we may have put some scoreboard pressure on ourselves.
A real positive in the 2nd quarter was the forward entry kicks we were looking for in the 1st quarter starting to work and providing our small forward line with one on one opportunities. Scott Cations was lively and kicked 2 goals in the first half with much of this a result from the hard work of Brodie Cooper, Darren Avery & Dylan Brogan up the ground. Dean Connors broke his tag and kicked a great captain’s goal late in the quarter to round off a great quarter.
There was a really good vibe in the rooms at half time with the guys down by 4 points and looking to kick the first two in the 3rd to get their noses in front. And that’s exactly what we did with Scott Cations and Jack Basley kicking early 3rd quarter goals and ensuring the Warriors were up by nearly a goal.
However good sides like UTS won’t let you kick 2 goals on them without a strong response. And for the next quarter and half it was UTS moving the ball better and probably running harder and the ball when in a contested situation. As a result the Warriors struggled to get clean ball and struggled to trouble the scoreboard again.
Highlight of the day was our backline which was a bits and pieces backline which did a fantastic job. None more so than James Considine who is getting better and better each game after spending virtually 18months in our 2’s. Drew Burden played his best game for the club and showed that he is willing to lift for the big games moving forward. Tim Scoular at CHB was sensational and spoiled, ran good lines and took strong defensive 50 grabs right up until the final siren.
UTS ran out convincing 41 point winners in the end and clearly showed they are the team to beat for the 2010 Division 1 Premiership. The Warriors will look forward to the return of a number of key players over the next few weeks with the side looking to peak for the finals in 4 weeks time.
Best on Ground: Tim Scoular, James Considine, Brodie Cooper, Scott Cations, Drew Burden, Donnie Ollington
