AT LAST – A CONVINCING WIN
By Peter Booth
SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 20-21-141 def EAST BURWOOD 7-6-48
We are still ½ a game outside the 5 after Norwood defeated Croydon. Ross and Dore came in for Johnson (inj) and T. Bird. It was a fine afternoon for Mark Cullen’s 248th game which equalled Andrew Dwyer’s record of most played senior games in the last 50 years. Chubba will set the record against Lilydale next week.
One of the games highlights was Daniel Papillo’s 4 goals in the first quarter – an unlikely goalkicking hero.
We came to play and blitzed the Rams in the first quarter kicking 6-4 to 0-1. Papillo was the punters friend with the first and proceeded to kick 3 more goals. Mendes goaled then Spriggs. Our attitude was terrific. Cotchett , Nummy and Bardon were busy early and Waller was good in defence with Millhouse.
In the 2nd quarter we added another 6-4 to 2 goals. Papillo was having a purple day – he gave to Griffiths who goaled then then gave to Millhouse who goaled on the run after streaming off the backline. Spriggs kicked his 2nd via Mendes then Greig, Froud and Cotchett goaled before the break. Mendes was in the thick of things as usual and Kelly gave us good run off half back. At ½ time we led 12-8 to 2-1. Better players for the half were Cotchett, Bardon, Papillo, Nummy, Mendes, Waller, Kelly and Millhouse.
The Rams outscored us during a very uninspiring third quarter. We were badly off target early with 6 behinds – Froud eventually goaled via Dell Aquila. The Rams were moving the ball better as we struggled to score. The Rams won the quarter narrowly but at ¾ time we led 13-14 to 4-2. Cotchett and Kelly were good.
In the last term we kicked 7-7 to 3-4. The Rams scored the first 2 goals before Greig kicked a 55 metre goal. Henderson took a strong pack mark and goaled as he and Griffiths assumed the ruck work with Ross off. Geraghty kicked a popular goal followd by 2 from Dell Aquila and singles to Spriggs and Froud. Bardon was busy around the packs and kicked to position well. Better players for the half were Cotchett, Bardon, Kelly, Nummy, Mendes, Millhouse and Siciliano. The Eagles scoring an emphatic 93 point win.
Goalkickers – Papillo 4, Spriggs 3, Froud 3, Dell Aquila 2, Greig 2 with singles to Mendes, Griffiths, Cotchett, Millhouse, Henderson and Geraghty.

Coach’s Comments – A great effort today – well done Mark Cullen.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 14-11-95 def EAST BURWOOD 7-7-49
I don’t think I have seen a reserves outfit as keen or as fired up before a game and it showed from the start. Webster came in along with colts players Barry-Murphy and Sonsie. Barry-Murphy controlled his wing all day and finished with 20 plus possessions while Sonsie booted 2 goals. At ¼ time we led 4-1 to 1-1 after McInerney kicked 3 goals and Stewart the other. The intensity and desire was fantastic. We went further ahead in the 2nd term with goals from Sonsie, Webster and Carrados. Jones and Bull were outstanding in the back line. At ½ time we led 7-4 to 2-3. Better players for the half were Bull, McInerney, Barry-Murphy, Jones, T.Bird and Rogneda.
The Rams opened the 3rd quarter with 2 goals in 2 minutes before Sonsie received from Siakavelis and goaled. Shambrook had a real purple patch in the term with some strong defence and was rewarded with a goal. McInerney kicked 2 more goals after a strong tackle and a receive from Barry-Murphy. Jones and Bull again were rock solid in defence. At ¾ time we led 11-6 to 5-4.
We kicked 3 goals to 2 in the last term – McInerney kicked his 6th while Frankish and Bull chimed in with a goal each. Better players for the half were Bull, McInerney, Jones, Siakavelis and Barry-Murphy.
Goalkickers – McInerney 6, Sonsie 2 with singles to Stewart, Webster, Carrodus, Shambrook, Frankish and Bull.
Coach’s Best Players – Jones, Bull, McInerney, Frankish, Siakavelis and Barry-Murphy.
Coach’s Comments – Our structures were a lot better – we played a terrific brand of footy – our contesting was fantastic – we were focused before the game.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 17-16-118 def EAST BURWOOD 8-5-53
We were missing a few good players – Moss who was injured and 2 promoted to the reserves. Strachan kicked our first via Pretto then came a string of 6 behinds before Pretto goaled. The Rams kicked 3 easy goals with an open forward line. At ¼ time scores were level with Vermont 2-6 to 3 goals.
After the break came another 3 behinds before Thompson goaled via Davidson. Pretto goaled via Thompson then Thompson again contributed to a Checkley goal. At half time we were 5-10 to 5-1. Better players for the half were Pretto, Thompson, McAuley and Lawlor.
We kicked 4-4 to 0-3 in the third term. Rodwell goaled then Pretto kicked his 3rd via Cooper. Johns kicked the goal of the day then Burmeister snapped a beauty. At ¾ time we led 9-14 to 5-4. We had finally broken them.
In the last quarter we kicked 8-2 to 3-1. Johns kicked his second then it was party time with goals coming from Symes, Yousef, Rodwell, Lawlor, Woolard and two more from Pretto. Better players for the half were Pretto, Burmeister, Lawler and McAuley.
