Despite a week of wet weather, Bruce Purser Oval looked a treat as the Bombers travelled to take on East Coast Eagles.
Overcast skies and light rain fell as the under 18s match got under way. Top spot on the ladder was up for grabs, and it was an evenly fought first term around the ground; but the Eagles kicked the only 2 goals for the quarter and the Bombers trailed by 10 points at the first change. But the tide quickly turned in the second term as the Bombers played their best football for several weeks - hard at the ball, defending strongly then creating space on the run and pinpoint delivery to the forwards. It was a treat to watch as the Bombers kicked 6 gpals for the quarter to lead by 16 points at the long break.
It was pleasing to see the intensity being maintained in the third term; and by winning the quarter and leading by 22 points at the last change the Bombers looked well set. The Eagles threw everything at the Bombers in the last term, but the Bombers were equal to the challenge and matched the Eagles goal for goal to ensure there would be no comeback. It was a welcome return to the winners list for the Bombers.
Final Score - North Shore 12.7 (79) def East Coast 8.6 (54)
It was a successful outing as well for the First Division side. After an even first quarter, the Bombers got on top in the second term to lead by 7 points at the long break. A run of 3 goals to 2 in the third term saw the Bombers edge further ahead, and by there was to be no way back for the Eagles.
Final Score - North Shore 9.9 (63) def East Coast 7.6 (48)
By the time the Premier Division match started, the overcast skies had cleared but a blustery wind had blown in, making ball control difficult and kicking a nightmare. Inaccuracy plagued both sides in a low scoring encounter; but the Eagles led by 4 points at the first change and by 19 at the long break.
It was more of the same in the third term. The Bombers worked hard and put the Eagles under pressure, but the tricky conditions worked against them and the Eagles were able to score twice from 50m penalties. At the last change the margin was 26 points, with the Bombers having some work to do to attempt to steal the game.
The Bombers' resistance crumbled in the last quarter, and the Eagles capitalised. The Bombers were unable to score a goal to the southern end during the match, and with the Eagles running through four goals in the latter stages the final margin extended to 50 points.
Final Score - East Coast 10.17 (77) def North Shore 3.9 (27)
