The Tradelink Western Magpies will this week embark on what could possibly be the toughest run home in the QAFL which will be sure to test the coaching staff, players and the club as a whole. Despite that there is no doubt the trademark determination, persistence and resilience of the Magpies to keep turning up and competing week in and week out over the last two years will shine through. It all starts this week when the Magpies take on the Labrador Tigers at Chelmer 2pm who are locked in a battle with Southport for the minor premiership.
The bye has provided some respite for coach Jarrod Thorpe as he will get some experience back in the form of Todd Dunn and Mark Dowley but is still missing Luke Scott, David Hamill and Richard Wenham. The Magpies will also be missing Conrad Lavey (hamstring) and Lachlan Woods-Honour (shoulder) following injuries they sustained in Alice Springs while Billy Moorhead is unavailable. Tim McEvoy will not play as he is supporting his partner Sophia for the birth of their first child this weekend and they have the best wishes of everyone at the club – a power forward would be nice!!
The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves have a crunch game in terms of qualifying for finals and perhaps even setting up an opportunity for a home elimination final. The magpies are currently in 4th spot on the ladder 1 game clear of Labrador who are 5th so 4 premiership points this week would go a long way towards securing a finals berth and a home elimination final.
Should the NT Thunder finish 4th in the senior competition and the Magpies finish 4th in the Reserves the Thunder would host an elimination final on August 28 in Darwin paving the way for the Magpies to host an elimination final at home.
This game will see the long awaited return of AFL AIS member Jackson Allen for his first game of 2010 following a long battle with Osteitis Pubis. We wish Jacko all the best for his return.
Tim Colburn and Jesse Hampel will play for the Brisbane Lions against NT Thunder at Coorparoo at 2pm – Good Luck boys.
The Westside Asphalt U/18’s have a week off as they have already played their R15 match against Morningside. Most of the boys will be keeping up their fitness in performing the running and water carrier duties in the Reserves and Seniors.
