Proud Mt Burr club members, Pete Guyett Snr and John Hawker were thrilled to be raising the new flag on the Can Hill flag pole during Saturday’s match against Nangwarry at home.
The flag’s mean looking main character was originally used in 1966 on transfers that were the equivilent of a sticker today. They were approximately 3x4 inches in size and were applied by wetting the back and sliding the transfer onto the required surface. Many would remember the old rego stickers that were applied the same way. These supporter’s transfers were well ahead of their time. The current character painted on the sign on Can Hill is a copy of this original.
Pete Guyett Snr said, “Mum had kept my First Year High School diary from 1966. When we had to tidy up her things we came across it. I had put the transfer on my diary back then and had always liked it so when I found it again I decided to have a flag made.”
The original transfer had the words, ‘Follow Mt Burr, the Mighty Mozzies’. Pete gave the diary to Hyland Fox Signs who had their graphic team replicate the transfer.
Kami Mc Innes was at the match on Saturday and said that his family still have an original transfer.
A local company from Mt Gambier made 1000 of the transfers in 1965.
Lu Mc Innes said her husband Ian had designed the transfer as he was a bit of “a doodler”. Lu said, “We sold the transfers for 2 shillings (.20c now) as a fund raiser for the club”. She added, “I had five cars back then which all had the transfer on them except the last one, which is the transfer I still have today”.
