EAGLES TOPPLE TOP SIDE

SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 13-11-89 def SCORESBY 11-21-87
It was a must win against the topside to keep any chance of playing in the finals alive. We lost McLure and Debney through injury while McInerney returned to the seconds. Carmody and Smith came back in and Matty Geraghty played his first game. Milestones with Grant McCarthy playing his 150th and Dean Waller his 50th. Conditions were cold but fine.
It was an even first quarter and it was a much harder and determined starting 4 winning the first 5 clearances to nil. Siciliano goaled for the punters and when Mullett goaled there seemed to be plenty of energy being displayed. They replied with 2 goals then Froud goaled via Bardon. Scoresby goaled on the siren to lead at ¼ time by 3 points 3-4 to3-1. Mullett and Cotchett were good early.
It took 9 minutes before Scoresby goaled in the 2nd term. The fans got really excited when we booted the next 3 goals to hit the front. Siciliano kicked his second then Della’Quilla goaled via Mullett and then Mendes goaled via Henley. The feeling was short lived when the Magpies kicked the next 5 in a row to take a handy 26 point lead at ½ time 9-10 to 6-2. Better players for the half were Mullett, Cotchett and Nummy.
Vermont really rallied in the 3rd term kicking 4-6 to 1-4. The old spirit was beginning to show. Henley goaled via Greig. Henley was to have a wonderful half of footy. Greig goaled via Froud and when Mendes kicked his second via Geraghty we were within 5 points. It was all Vermont with 9 inside 50’s to one. They scored but we got it back on the siren when Mullett goaled via a Griffith’s ruck tap. At ¾ time Scoresby led 10-14 to 10-8. It was really game on.
In the last quarter the Magpies goaled after 20 seconds but that was to be their last goal of the day. Greig goaled via Cotchett and when Cullen goaled it was the Vermont desperation of old. We had a fantastic crack – tough – close in stuff – barely giving them space to move – there was a resolve. When Greig goaled we were a point infront.
With 2 minutes showing on the scoreboard we ran the clock down for a fantastic win. The song in the rooms nearly lifted the roof off. Better players for the half were Henley, Mullett, Mendes and Kelly.
Goalkickers – Greig 3 with 2 each to Siciliano, Mendes and Mullett with singles to Henley, Froud, Della’Quilla and Cullen.
Best Players – Mullett, Henley, Mendes, Kelly, Nummy, Della’Quilla.and Griffiths.
Possessions – Mullett 34, Henley 24, Spriggs 22, Kelly 21, Siciliano and Mendes 18 and Nummy 16.
1% - A total of 146 our highest for the year – Nummy 12 with 11 each to McCarthy, Mullett and Mendes, Geraghty 10 and Cullen 9.
Coach’s Comments – To hear the song again is a huge lift. The whole group was fantastic. David singled out Michael Della’Quilla who had something to prove playing against the Scoresby coach who coached him at Box Hill.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
SCORESBY 9-20-74 def VERMONT 4-3-27
With both teams on 9 wins we expected this to be a very competitive game. We were competitive at least for one quarter. Goals came from Dore and Frankish as we led 2-2 to 0-5 at ¼ time.
The Magpies kicked 3-5 to 0-1 in the 2nd quarter and at half time it was clear we were struggling. Early in the 3rd term John McCarthy and I were in the senior rooms listening to David Banfield do his pre-match presentation to the players – it was inspiring stuff and obviously worked. We didn’t miss much as McInerney was our only goal scorer as they booted another two. At ¾ time they led 5-12 to 3-3.
Scoresby kicked 4-8 to 1 goal in the last quarter with Frankish kicking his second. It was a very disappointing team effort.
Goalkickers – Frankish 2 with singles to Dore and McInerney.
Coach’s Best Players – Carrodus, Shambrook, J.Bird, McInerney and Quon.
Coach’s Comments – We got a lesson from a side who wants to play finals footy. Our ball use was abysmal – our structures were bad – we played selfish football.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
SCORESBY 16-10-106 def VERMONT 10-13-73
Another challenge against a top 5 team. We dominated the first quarter but we missed some easy shots. Thompson kicked our first goal after a fantastic build up. We continued to pepper the goals but only 1-6 resulted. Woolard goaled via Castersen on the siren. At ¼ time we led 2-6 to 0-1.
Scoresby kicked two quick goals after the break – they were linking better and our disposal was poor. Davidson goaled but they added two more to lead at ½ time by 2 points 4-3 to 3-7. Better players for the half were Johns, Davidson, Pretto and McCafferty.
Thompson’s goal after the break was terrific – read about it below in INVICTA PLAY OF DAY. Vermont lapses seem to happen every week – yes, we had another one. During this period Scoresby added 6-5 to 1-2 – we were sloppy in defence – our handball was poor and they gave us a lesson in team play. They ran with each other and blocked for each other. It was copybook football by them. Sonsie goaled late to cut the margin at ¾ time to 29 points.
When Scorresby kicked the first goal of the final term it was well and truly all over. Pretto and McCafferty goaled but they slammed on the next 3 as we were killed out of the centre. Belated goals to Barry-Murphy with two and Johns made the score respectable but they put the icing on the cake with the last 2 of the match. Unfortunately, against top opposition we manage to fall short with our lapses and lack of intensity. Better players for the half were White and Woolard.
Goalkickers – Barry-Murphy and Thompson 2 with singles to Woolard, Davidson, Pretto, McCafferty and Johns.
Coach’s Best Players – White, McCafferty, Burmeister, Wiliams, Symes, Barry-Murphy and Thompson.
INVICTA PLAY OF THE DAY – CHRIS THOMPSON for his smother off the boot and left foot snap goal early in the 3rd quarter.
Coach’s Comments – They were hard at the footy – that’s where you are supposed to be. We got smashed at the clearances – we went back to the same old –same old. There is a cloud over this group.
