The Tradelink Western Magpies although not acknowledged through other reporting of the game were forced to battle out another game short of rotation options. The already injury hit Magpies lost Lachlan Woods-Honour with an AC injury in the first two minutes and Conrad Lavey with a torn hamstring in the third quarter to go down 9.6.60 to 22.8.140 to NT Thunder in Alice Springs.
Despite those losses the Magpies bounced out of the blocks at Traeger Park dominating the clearances and opening exchanges to kick 3 of the first four goals with two to Jye Spencer who finished with four and the other to Tony Flynn. From that point the Thunder machine kicked into gear despite losing Shaun Tapp for the game and piled on the next 7 goals in a flurry to go to quarter time leading 8.3 to 3.2.
The Thunder continued to make the most of their forward 50 entries and deadly accuracy at goals kicking 5.1 to 1.2 and 6.0 to 1.1 in the second and third quarters respectively. The Magpies gifted the Thunder the first two goals of the third quarter with basic skill errors in their defensive 50 and dominated the quarter. The Thunders goal efficiency was highlighted by the Magpies stats board that showed the Magpies competitive or leading the Thunder in clearances, contested possessions, handball receives and inside 50’s but could not get the score on the board. This was highlighted by the Magpies clanger count as they often butchered the ball going inside 50 or turned it over through the middle of the ground or at half back.
At ¾ time coach Jarrod Thorpe challenged his chargers to win the last quarter and in a great effort with both teams starting to feel the impact of reduced benches the Magpies rallied to win the quarter 4.0 to 3.4.
Ed McDonnell was again sensational across CHF taking numerous marks and presenting all day and finally scoring a goal from dead in front in the last quarter after missing 3 or 4 opportunities earlier. Jye Spencer was very good kicking 4 as a small forward and Conrad Hudghton was very good all day through the midfield as his stocks as a future prospect continue to rise. Callum Carseldine gave gun Cameron Illet a hard time all day but was tested by Illet’s superior work rate. Drew Mitchell, Matt Dillon and Conrad Lavey all battled hard all day in defense and Gerard Moore was manful in the ruck while Greg Lavey persisted in a number of roles.

The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves needed to avenge their loss to Redland last week to secure 4th spot on the ladder and were able to do so running out 14.15.99 to 11.11.77 winners. This sets up a season defining match against Labrador after the bye who sit one game behind the Magpies in 5th place with a superior % after beating Aspley by 70 points.
Dom Beer was outstanding in the ruck for the Magpies while James Pennycuick was the lead the goal scoring with 3 well supported by a total of 9 goal scorers across the match. Scott Clarke was good all day and the ever reliable Reid Dobson once again figured in the best players. Ben Jaenke-Cain, Kale Reed and Chris Judson all performed well and have put their names up for recall into the Senior team in two weeks time.
The usual slow start would have had the Magpies nervous with Redland leading 3.4 to 1.4 at the first break but the Magpies got the game back on track in the second to take a two point lead into the long break. It was the premiership quarter performance by the Magpies that broke the game open scoring 6.3 to 1.4 and they were in control from that point on despite the Bombers winning the last quarter 5.1 to 3.4.

The Westside Asphalt Western Magpies U/18’s missed an opportunity to secure the minor premiership going down to Noosa 10.7.67 to 8.12.60. The Magpies hold top spot by only 7.2% from Noosa but have 4 point and some % to come as they have already played their R15 match v Morningside. The Magpies final percentage will be 139.37% and Noosa will have to beat 8th placed Broadbeach in R15 convincingly to obtain the 9.23% they need to steal the minor premiership.
The Magpies looked to be in control at half time leading Noosa by 5.6 to 3.2 but the Magpies have had the tendency to coast to victory throughout the season and let Noosa in the third to reduce the margin to 2 points at ¾ time. Goal efficiency proved to be the difference in the last quarter with Noosa kicking 4.1 from their 5 scoring shots to finish over the top of the Magpies who kicked 2.3.
