This Saturday traditional arch rivals, Huntly and North Bendigo, will do battle for a coveted prize which has become an annual event to relive the rivalry that the 2 clubs experienced in the former days of Golden City League
The two clubs now compete in the Heathcote and District Football Netball League and over the years there have been a number of players in both football and netball that have played for both clubs. To celebrate this rivalry and the history the two clubs share the Golden City Cup was born. Since 2004 the two clubs have battled it out on the field and the court to see who takes the Cup.
Huntly’s senior footballers have never won the Golden City Cup and are out to make amends this weekend, a difficult task against the inform North Bendigo side.
Until this year Huntly had not won 2 consecutive games for almost 10 years. So the claws are out and the players are primed to give it their all. Coach Daniel Geary faces the tribunal this week and the outcome is vital to the hawks success on the weekend.
Huntly have had more success on the netball court with the A Grade Team winning the Cup in 2004,2005,2006 and 2008. North Bendigo being the successful winners in 2007 and 2009.
To commemorate the day the Talbot / Robertson Medal will be awarded to the best on ground and the Hayes / Simpson Medal will be awarded to the best on Court. Named after two prominent families from both Huntly and North Bendigo who have been heavily involved in their respective clubs both on the football field and the netball court.
Huntly is hosting the match this year on Saturday at Trickey’s Diesel Oval, Strauch Reserve, Huntly. Teams will be assembled on the oval at 2:00 pm for the official welcome, with the seniors kicking off at 2:15 pm and the A Grade match starting at 2:45pm.
