SENIORS FINAL SCORE
BALWYN 18-11-119 def VERMONT 9-12-66
An overcast windy day at Vermont Reserve and the hope of restoring our pride after the embarrassing loss in round 5. We made 4 changes with injuries to Rushton and Ross with Carmody and Rogneda dropped to the reserves. Waller played his first senior game for the year and did ok – he was joined by McLure, Griffiths and McInerney. Papillo arrives back from Italy late next week but jet lag might hold him back from selection.
Balwyn set up their win with an 8 goal first quarter with the breeze. Froud kicked the first goal for the punters with Greig kicking two – one via Mendes and the other from a clever snap. We were getting slaughtered at the centre breaks. Nummy, Henley and Bardon were prominent early. At ¼ time they led 8-5 to 3-1.
Balwyn disproved the wind advantage theory booting 6 goals to 1 in the second term Bardon was our only goal scorer. Henley and Mullett among our best. At half time they led 14-6 to 4-3.
We rallied after half time as it appeared the Tigers were getting tired. Despite having plenty of the ball it did not show on the scoreboard. We kicked 3-5 to 1-1 with Greig really presenting himself at full forward. He took 5 marks for the quarter and kicked a goal as well as helping in a Mendes goal. Millhouse strayed down from the backline to kick the other. Bird and Henderson were doing their best in the ruck while McCarthy was getting the best of Bowden after the Tiger kicked 3 early goals. Henley, Mendes, Henderson and Greig were among our best for the term. At ¾ time they led 15-7 to 7-8.
We really worked hard in the last quarter – we were having a real crack but again got little scoreboard reward for our hard work. Balwyn got a goal against the trend then Spriggs and Mullett goaled. Late in the game we started to tire and the Tigers booted the last two goals to win by 53 points.
Goalkickers – Greig 3 with singles to Spriggs, Millhouse, Mendes, Froud, Bardon and Mullett.
Best Players – Henley, Mullett, Nummy, Millhouse, Mendes, Henderson, Bardon. McCarthy and Greig.
Possessions – Henley 28, Mullett 26, Bardon 23, Mendes 23, Spriggs 22 and 20 each to Nummy and Millhouse.
1% - McCarthy 20, Henderson 12, Mullett 10, Waller 9 and Kelly 9.
Coach’s Comments – It was mediocrity on the first half – I almost ripped my heart out - half baked efforts got what they deserved. We change things only to get the same outcome.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 15-16-106 def BALWYN 6-6-42
I was hosting the lunch so I didn’t see the game but John McCarthy kept some details.

Coach’s Best Players were – Geraghty, Smith, Rogneda, Dore, J.Bird and Humphrey.
Coach’s Comments – We didn’t break the shackles in the first half – In the second half we were much cleaner and had good run from behind.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 14-13-97 def ROWVILLE 6-8-44
Because Balwyn don’t field a colts team we played 2nd division team Rowville. The game was for premiership points but because they are in a division lower the maximum a first division team can win by is 60 points.
They were super competitive early and at ¼ time we led 2-2 to 0-3 with goals from Williams and Lawler.
We kicked 4-2 to 2-1 in the 2nd quarter. Thompson who was playing in the forward pocket next to Sonsie goaled then Sonsie replied via Barry-Murphy. McCafferty and Barry-Murphy combined in a McAuley goal the Lawler kicked one just before the break. At ½ time we led 6-4 to 2-4. Better players for the half were – McCafferty, Lawlor, Davidson, White, Woolard and McAuley.
We really opened up after the break kicking 7-8 to 1 goal. Sonsie kicked 3 goals with others coming from Thompson, Yousef via a perfect pass from Johns, Cooper and Ferres via Cooper. At ¾ time we led 13-12 to 3-4.
The boys relaxed in the last term with Sonsie kicking his 5th. They kicked 3-4 to 1-1 but it was a solid 53 point win. Better players for the half were – Pretto, Sonsie, Johns, White and McCafferty.
Goalkickers – Sonsie 5, Thompson 2, Lawler 2 with singles to Williams, McAuley, Yousef, Ferres and Cooper.
Coach’s Best Players – White, Checkley, Johns, Wlliams, Thompson and McCafferty.
Coach’s Comments – A good team win – we shared the footy extremely well – our handball cut them to ribbons – the midfield worked hard – our switching and use of the ball was good.
