The continuing good form of Gledders, the fact that we won the last quarter and 4 free tickets to the Old Carey luncheon were the only highlights the Oracle could take away from what was a bleak day at Bulleen. The trip home on Eastlink with the Chairman was probably number 4! The Hyphen, in his 50th game for the club will have little lasting memories of the game apart from his own consistent solid form.
The match started really well in shocking wind conditions and after Al Dog, Laz and Hammer from the boundary all kicked truly in free flowing open play the wheels came off well and truly. For the next 2 quarters we didn’t kick a goal – nearly two hours. While in schoolyard parlance Old Carey not only stole our laptops, lunch money and phone they also tied us to the goal post at lunchtime. Even BOO and Case’s old man lost the supporter stoushes! It was a pretty disappointing effort and while the last quarter was a whole lot better, we need to improve if we are going to have any part of the pointy end of the season. The risk taking, running game of the last quarter that saw Browny score twice and Gledders finally rewarded for superb game was something we will have to replicate in the coming weeks. As Lappas said, Carey haven’t, in two games played this season, seen much of what we can do. The down side is we have kicked just 2 goals in 4 of the 8 quarters we have played against them this year.
The Reserves went down in a close one, continuing their recent spate of good form. It was pretty even all day with the boys hitting the front early in the last quarter. Unfortunately they could not maintain the momentum and the home side jagged a couple late. The big bboys, Seccull and Vittas were terrific while Drew Gilby got amongst the goals, kicking three.
