By Peter Booth
SENIORS FINAL SCORE
CROYDON 10-14-74 def VERMONT 8-8-56
A cold, showery day played on a quagmire. Only one change with Rogneda replacing Webster . Looking back on the game we lost it when the Blues kicked the last 4 goals before quarter time. They played the conditions superbly in the first quarter kicking long when the ball was relatively dry. They kicked the first 2 goals before Mendes snapped our first. When Mullett goaled the scores were level at 2-2 apiece. Then the deciding 10 minutes in the game when they added 4 more to lead at ¼ time 6-3 to 2-2.
It was 2 goals each in the 2nd term with goals to Kelly via Spriggs and Ross and Greig after a build up from Henderson and Kelly. Della’Quilla was off with a yellow card. With Ross playing on the backline and McLure out injured Travis Bird and Hendersdon were doing well in the ruck. Better players for the half were Cullen, Spriggs, Mullett, Henley.McCarthy and Bird. At half time they led 8-7 to 4-4.
The Blues extended their lead with the first goal after the long break. As often happens we controlled play for 10 minutes with no result on the scoreboard then against the trend they goaled. Bardon goaled but they were double our score at ¾ time 10-10 to 5-5.
Vermont rallied in the final term and showed terrific fighting spirit kicking 3-1 to 4 behinds. Henley, who had a fine game despite a heavy knock goaled from a snap then Froud goaled via Henley. When Greig goaled there was a glimmer of hope but goals were hard to come by in the gloom and mud. At the end it all got back to the last 10 minutes of the 1st quarter. Better players for the half were Cullen, Henley, Mullett, Nummy and McCarthy.
Goalkickers – Greig 2 and singles to Mendes, Mullett, Kelly, Bardon, Froud and Henley.
Best Players – Henley, Cullen, Mullett, Nummy, McCarthy, Henderson and Spriggs in the 1st half.
Possessions – Henley 29, Mullett 26, Cullen 24, Cotchett 23, Bardon 20, Nummy 19 and Millhouse 17. Henderson had 27 hit outs.
1% - McCarthy 16, Mullett 12, Millhouse 10 with 9 each to Henley, Spriggs and Carmody.
Coach’s Comments – We are still in the hunt – it was our best away game for the year. We clearly won the 2nd half. Our hardness around the pack was good but they were better.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
CROYDON 7-10-52 def VERMONT 3-3-21
The game was between the 2 top teams.
Our only real joy came in the first term when Bordin kicked 2 goals and we trailed by 8 points at ¼ time. We struggled for numbers and borrowed 2 colts players to fill our bench.
Early in the 2nd quarter we had all the play in our forward line and when Bordin kicked his third we trailed by 3 points at half time. One highlight from the quarter was a fantastic pick up in the mud by Geraghty.
We scored only 1 point in the last half so there is very little to report except that Waller got through ok and will be pressing for senior selection next week..
Goalkickers – Bordin 3.
Coach’s Best Players – McInerney, J.Bird, Griffiths and Geraghty.
Coach’s Comments – They were cleaner in the conditions – they sat on the outside of the contests and cleared the ball.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 6-12-48 def CROYDON 3-6-24
It took the colts all day to get the better of one of the lowly teams on the ladder.Lawlor kicked our only goal for the 1st quarter and at the first break they led 1-3 to 1-2.
In the 2nd term we had all the play in our forward line but in the first 10 minutes our forward players didn’t work hard enough to keep the ball inside. Eventually we peppered away and kicked 6 behinds to one to lead at ½ time 1-8 to 1-4. Better players for the half were Johns, Lawlor, Pretto, Moss and McAuley.
Things got serious when Croydon kicked 2 early goals. Johns kicked our only goal for the quarter. At ¾ time they led by 3 points 3-6 to 2-9.
All of a sudden our game found another gear and on a day where goals were at a premium we slammed on 4 to win running away. Checkley kicked 2 with singles to Lawlor and Thompson. Sonsie started to liven up the forward line. Better players for the half were Johns, Lawler, Williams, Mendes and McCullouch.
Goalkickers – Checkley 2, Lawlor 2 and singles to Thompson and Johns.
INVICTA PLAY OF THE DAY – PAUL WHITE for his 2 desperate dives through the mud to lock the ball in.
Coach’s Best Players – Johns and Lawlor equal best, Williams, McAuley, McCullough and Yousef.
Coach;’s Comments – It was really tough out there. After half time we rose to the occasion. We got the 4 points after we star
