Following on from an improved performance against Old Mentonians we entered the week confident about the prospects against Aquinas. As the week started to unfold the circumstances began to conspire for the clash against our traditional rival, firstly the sacking of their coach and subsequent appointment of a former club legend! The teeming rain then turned the Aquinas ground into an absolute bog, restricting our running game and turning the game into a rolling maul!
Aquinas jumped out early and had 2 goals on the board to take a handy lead in the conditions however we responded with a couple of our own and went into quarter time a goal behind. The second quarter at the dryer of the 2 ends was our best quarter and saw us outscore Aquinas 3 goals to 2 and go to the main break 3 points adrift!
The second half was unfortunately as miserable as the weather as the rain closed in and Aquinas were able to score 3 goals while we failed to register a major. They ran eventual winners by 26 points and a very disappointed Friar outfit now has a huge battle to ensure that the club is playing in this division next year.

We arrived to find what was an extremely wet and boggy Aquinas College lower oval. After a few weeks off the winners list, we needed to get back on the winner's list in tough condition's the guys needed to work for each other on and off the footy, which has been missing for the past few matches.
To their credit, the boys did just that and by working hard it allowed us better use of the footy.
We had 30 shots at goal and we able to comfortably knock over Aquinas in very tough conditions. While this was a good win and percentage booster, we must keep improving both as a group and also as individuals.

We were at home against 2nd placed Old Westbourne, so we knew we were going to be in for a challenge. We had one of our strongest teams for the year, including some new players. The first half was certainly our best for year and a half time we held a 9 point lead – we were playing great team football. Our skills and aggression at the ball was fantastic. It was great to have a full bench so we could rotate players, although just before half time we lost 3 players to injury and were down to 3 on the bench.
After half time l think the jet lag wore off for Westbourne and they came out and were harder at the footy then us. They kicked early goals and our boys went into their shells a bit, while unfortunately we also missed some easy goals and had a certain goal given as a point during this quarter. Into the last and l asked for one more effort, which l was given. The boys came out hard and if not for some wasted opportunities would have been right back in it. They are a good team and we have proved that we can go with the best of them. The boys took a lot of confidence out of this game and it can only be onwards and upwards from here on.
Thanks to the volunteers on Saturday – the boys and l appreciate it greatly. Special congratulations must also go to Whitefriars College, who should be very proud of the condition of their oval – it was fantastic to play on.

The thirds last week had a must win game against Uni Blacks. I said to the boys prior to the game that it was going to take a 4 quarter effort if we were going to get the 4 points, and that our tackling & pressure would have to be raised to another level.
To the team’s credit, they did just this. Brett Vey in the backline was exceptional in the 1st half as was Nat Tomacek, Cameron Tomacek & Peter Hayes. Their determination to drag down much bigger opposition to themselves was sometimes unbelievable, and we went into half time 7 points in front.
We knew that our job wasn’t finished yet, Uni Blacks were looking for revenge after we beat them convincingly at their home ground earlier in the year. With only 3 points in it at 3 quarter time, the boys were up and about ready for the challenge that lay ahead. Blacks skipped away from us early in the last but the Friars were not done yet. Within the last 5 minutes of the game, we kicked 3 successive goals to make the margin 2 points in Blacks favor, so we threw Shannon Malone into the centre to try and get a quick clearance. It worked! Friars running the ball out of the centre surging forward to kick a certain goal and….the siren went. Friars go down by 2 points.
With Banyule beating St Bernards, we have now slipped out of the top 4 on percentage. We will need to win just about every game coming home to the finals to get back to our rightful spot in the 4. This starts by everybody getting to training this Thursday night. Never Say Die.

The 4ths were at home this week against NOBS/ST PATS. With a full side on the park and a couple of players on the bench, we were looking to get off to a good start. Unfortunately this didn’t eventuate with NOBS coming out strong kicking 5 goals to 1, taking a 26 points lead in to the first break. The boys lifted their intensity and we started to make the game a contest in the 2nd quarter. Paul Draper led the way with some fierce tackling and pressure, while we started to win the ball out of the middle with Brad Lees dominating the hitouts. Unfortunately, with our forwards not firing, we were unable to make it count on the scoreboard and trailed by 32 points at the main break.
The third quarter was a letdown to say the least, as our intensity and hunger for the football dropped off. Overall our skill level is what hurt us the most, making it extremely hard for our defenders once the ball was turned over. With a 76 point deficit at the start of the last quarter it would have been easy for the guys to lie down. Instead we lifted and if it weren’t for a couple of late goals we would have won the quarter. In the end we were beaten by the better side on the day, going down by 85 points.
If we turn up this week switched on from the first bounce and ready to put in a 4 quarter effort we will give Williamstown a run for their money!
