The Tradelink Western Magpies in the words of coach Jarrod Thorpe did not turn up to play against Aspley on a day when they were given a chance to break a 29 game QAFL losing streak against their closest rivals on the QAFL ladder. It was not to be and everyone was disappointed in the performance that saw Aspley run out 19.13.127 to 7.8.50 winners.
Thorpe has acknowledged that a young team like the Magpies are bound to have inconsistent levels of performance and noted that they had been up for the last month. He was disappointed that the let down came in a game with an opportunity to win and also a big milestone game for the club and Co-Captain Chris Mihalopoulos.
None the less Thorpe has remained adamant that this result changes nothing in terms of the journey he and his players are taking and the process that they have been and will continue to follow resolute in the belief the positive results will come.
There was no change in the form of James Rozynski who was the Magpies best again as he has been for a number of weeks. His standing as a footballer defined when in the last quarter he attacked a 50/50 contest with Robert Copeland at CHF winning the ball and running straight through the former Lions hard man in one motion. To the plaudits of the crowd he continued on leaving Copeland lying in a heap in his wake and set up Greg Friis who finished with class around his body on the right foot under pressure from deep in the forward pocket.
Unfortunately this was one of few highlights for the Magpies on the day which saw them finish the game with few rotation options on the bench losing Luke Scott at quarter time and David Hamill in the second quarter. Jye Spencer battled hard all day and Mihalopoulos busted his guts in his 200th game well supported by Greg Friis, Greg Lavey and Gerard More who was his usual hard working self.

The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves on the other hand were able to bounce back after going down to Southport last week in defeating Aspley 16.16.112 to 10.4.64 and securing outright 4th position on the ladder 1 game clear of Labrador in 6th. The contest was tight up until half time when the Magpies led by 9 points but kicked away with a 5 goal to 1 3rd quarter and then iced the Hornets in the last sealing the game with 4 goals to 3.
Peter Kilroy was everywhere in what many described as his best game for the club. He was in space all day long as it seemed no Aspley player wanted to go near the scruffy looking musician with the 90’s skin tight SANFL shorts. He hit targets inside 50 all day and was well supported by non other than the barometer Reid Dobson and Dominic Beer who was the best big man on the ground. Ben Jaenke-Cain and Billy Moorhead responded well after being omitted from the Seniors and Kale Reed was in everything down forward kicking 4 goals and taking a specky (pictured) well supported by Jack Parkes who also kicked 4 goals.

The Westside Asphalt Western Magpies U/18’s secured top spot on the ladder with a 11.10.76 to 8.9.57 win over Labrador gaining redemption for their round 1 loss and now have a 1 game break on closest rivals Noosa and Redland. The young Magpies were well in control at ¾ time leading by 24 points but the Tigers had a real crack in the last quarter kicking 5 goals to 4 but the Magpies were always in control to win by 19 points.
Lachlan Woods-Honour backed up from his promising Senior debut kicking 3 goals while Tom Ielasi also backed up and performed well. Big Dylan McDonald was best on ground in the Ruck while Billy North was also among the best not having to back up from the U/16’s. Garry Fozard and Bryce Crossley continued their good recent form and Jimmy Scarce showed signs of returning to his best form.
