But it may help to
heed the words of Guru Bob: “God has created the Southport Football Club for
people who are destined never to experience contentment, satisfaction and
fulfilment.”
To put it bluntly we
got spanked – we were goalless until 10 minutes into the third quarter. There are
two theories on how to beat Southport but unfortunately neither of them work,
particularly when you’re up against a gun full forward (Hughes 11) and missing
at least six of your best 22, and we’re not talking Akermanis speak.
Unfortunately we are
about to lose another. Ryan Clough, has been a super fit regular for seasons
2007, ‘09 and ‘10 (48 games), who
was equal fifth B&F and awarded Best Team Man 2009. He is the ultimate team
player and arguably the most outstanding tagger in the QAFl who has destroyed
some bigtime reputations. But Cloughy has accepted an offer to spend the rest
of the season in a Finnish sauna in preparation to a lucrative career in the
British AFL. We are reliably informed he will not be alone in the sauna. Best
of luck in finishing Cloughy.
The blokes looked the
goods during the warm ups in their new fortune cookie jumpers, direct from
Beijing via Tiny, and generously sponsored by KLF Interior Linings in lieu of
super profit taxes.
We are not going to
belt out a commentary of the game; clearly we were up against a classy team,
(their ressies had 3 supplementary players from GCFC), against our, with
respect, patched up side.
In general, as one
observer continually remarked, we seemed to be blissfully unaware of player
accountability, positioning, (especially that which used to be called ‘playing
in front’), and ball ‘security’, making it all too easy for the opposition. We
could’ve done with more pride and responsibility in ball possession.
And we failed to
utilise an arguable comparative advantage in pace on the wide-open spaces of
the ‘F’ Reserve. There were too few instances of run and carry early on and not
too much following the long break when players were instructed to have a go.
Flannagan and R-Pants did have a go and in the context of the game we enjoyed a
5 minute purple patch in the final stanza for 3 goals.
It wasn’t all bleak.
We reckon we matched ‘em for ball possession in the midfield, but our disposal,
particularly our foot skills, let us down time-and-time again. It is difficult
to put scores on the board in the face of continual turnovers in the critical
corridor zone especially when the nut is whisked back down and put to
advantageous space for Hughes.
Further, in our view,
JD, Rusty and R-Pants were responsible for a fair share of centre clearances.
All three battled gamely against the odds. And the aforementioned Ryan Clough put in first, second and
third efforts in a game length tussle with a couple of opponents.
The box tried multiple
moves as evidenced by our goal kickers that included back line stalwarts
Quickie and our own Jenny Craig representative, Rhino. And Cookie was thrown
around the ground – ruck, CHB, CHF - in an effort to lift the side. Quickie
will have ironically enjoyed the day. He has enormous potential and experiences
like this will round off his education. And give him his due, he didn’t stop
trying. Indeed no-one gave up, and that is an attitudinal requirement for
sport, but never-the-less, admirable when you are on the end of a drubbing. Sport
doesn’t build character, it reveals it.
Also on the positive
side, the comparison between Merrimac Oval and that ‘F’ Reserve suggests a
rethink on game scheduling for the GCFC if something other than a soulless
venue is seen as important to rising up.
Magoos
Another hard one to swallow, particularly after a competitive first quarter in
which we scored our 2 goals for the match. It is probably getting more and more
difficult to run out each week and thanks to those, including half a dozen or
so under 18s, who pull the jumper on for the early game each week. Your time
will come.
