The Dandenong Southern Stingrays sparkling run of seven wins came to a sudden halt in the Round 11 TAC Cup clash against the consistently strong Geelong Falcons the day after the Stingrays Vic Country Under 18 representatives were pivotal in the fourth win in row for Vic Country against Queensland in the Under 18 Nationals.

Tom Lynch, 4 goals and named best player and Arryn Sippos (1 goal) played forward, Mitch Hallahan, named second best; Luke Parker, Adam Treloar (2 goals) and Daniel Harrison were part of the mid field and 16 year old Matt Buntine played back. In cool and fine conditions, the Stingrays welcomed the Geelong Falcons who were freshened from a 2 week break. The ground was in great condition and a credit to the work of the City of Dandenong curators despite the consistent rain over the weekend, it was a game of missed opportunities and left a lot of questions about the status of the Stingrays. Corey Buchan kicked the first goal of the game for the Stingrays at the seven minute mark of the first term, but it would be 10 minutes into the last term that the Stingrays managed their second. In between were 16 straight behinds spread between 11 Stingrays players.
The Falcons played a quick, attacking and counter attacking style of play and regularly caught out the Stingrays with deft skills and the release of runners into space. The Falcons also played a small forwardline which worked well up the ground and turned the Stingrays defenders around. A couple of positives for the game were the return to the Stingrays from school football of Tom Curren and Dylan Shiel, the efforts of the two 17 year old Rucks in Stewart Damon and Todd Elton and the continued good form of Jimmy Jennings but positives were hard to find. Stingrays coach was very disappointed with a number of aspects of the Stingrays efforts. Questions around preparation, ability to adapt and compete and leadership were front and centre of Yeats’ post match debrief as he and the match committee looked for answers.
Next weekend is another big test for the Stingrays with a trip to Warrawee Park, Oakleigh on Sunday at 1.00pm to take on the in-form and TAC Cup flag favourites, the Oakleigh Chargers in Round 13 of the TAC Cup. Entry is free.
