The Tradelink Western Magpies were far from disgraced in another determined display under Coach Jarrod Thorpe in going down to a full strength Southport by 56 points at Chelmer on Saturday 5.9.39 to 13.7.95. This was the Magpies lowest score in Thorpe’s four games in control but it was an indication of a slightly more defensive plan against the QAFL powerhouse that resulted in the Sharks scoring less than 100 points for only the third time this season.
Thorpe’s No.1 mantra since taking over the Magpies has been about earning the respect of the competition on and off the field and he would have been delighted by comments from the opposition coach. Craig Crowley said of the Magpies,” They hit us hard and got good numbers around the footy. We turned the ball over a lot through their pressure. Their midfield were very good.”
Missing up to 6 Senior regulars from previous weeks through a mixture of injury and unavailability the Magpies were slow to start kicking 1.1 to the Sharks 5.5 in the first quarter and a Southport blitz looked on the cards.
Led by James Rozynski the Magpies form player of the last month the Magpies more than matched the Sharks in the second term but failed to capitalize on the scoreboard. The Magpies had more scoring shots of 7 to 6 but the Sharks were a little more accurate notching up 2.4 to 1.6 for the quarter.
Gerard Moore was in doubt prior to the match having suffered from a stomach virus on Friday but was able to dig deep working hard in the Ruck and then push down into defense to help Mark Dowley and Ed McDonnell nullify Cleve Hughes. This teamwork also with Conrad Lavey on debut and Drew Mitchell returning to the seniors helping out Mark Dowley was able to keep Hughes to 2 goals his lowest return for the season.
Although his opponent Cameron MacLaren kicked 3 goals for the match Conrad “Chips” Lavey had a fascinating battle all day long with his hardness, desperation and marking skills a standout on debut. Val Pope was the best of the forwards kicking two goals but the better performers for the Magpies were through the midfield and in defense including Callum Carseldine who continues to win admirers with his hardness, Chris Mihalopoulos, Chris Judson and Ben Jaenke-Cain.

The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves had a crucial game against the Reserves competition leaders for the third time this season but depleted by injuries the Magpies were unable to mount a challenge following a competitive first quarter and went down 8.8.56 to 17.20.122. The Magpies have now slipped to 5th on the ladder but remain only 1 game out of second spot but have to face Southport again at Frankhouser before seasons end.
Reid Dobson was once again the Magpies best strongly assisted by his future brother in laws Sean and Brett Mcevoy with the latter much improved following his refresher course in Australian Football up North last week. Blake McClennan made a strong return from a hamstring injury to play well but failed to get past the second round of Mr Magpie – always next year! Chris McClennan also returned from injury while Jason Evans kicked 3 goals up forward and Matt Thompson finished with 2.

The Westside Asphalt U/18 Team redeemed themselves from last weeks let down against Redland to knock off competition leaders Mt Gravatt and take top spot on the ladder. Following and even first quarter the Magpies steadily pulled away over the final 3 quarters to run out 14.2.86 to 6.6.42 winners.
Tony Flynn was best finishing with 3 goals following making his QAFL debut for the Brisbane Lions last week and was one of a spread of 8 goal kickers for the young Magpies. Jess Hampel was also very good backing up from a good game in the Reserves on Saturday.
