What a weekend...
From start to finish the plane trip,
staying at Rydges in Sydney’s North Shore, dinner to satisfy the appetite of
Buddy Franklin or any of our dedicated team, and one football team exploring the fire escape up to the
twelfth floor!
Winning on top of all that, a close and
difficult match, away from home, with different rules and strange umpires, it’s
almost too much.
Quarter One
At the start of the match the Mosman Swans
showed they would not be an easy team to defeat, however when Fraser Morrisby
took a great mark on the boundary, the last line of defence the East Malvern
Knights regained their confidence. Chris Antil and Stefano Gallucci worked hard around the packs. Daniel Condon chased and competed
hard and laid tackles and Quinn got in at stoppages.
Quarter Two
We soon realized that just because they
play rugby in NSW doesn’t mean they couldn’t play Aussie Rules; and we had a formidable opponent. The Mosman Swans controlled the second
quarter and stood firm in the face of the East Malvern charge and the coaches
plan A became plan C.
Andrew Blaher went in hard, Jamie Miller
did a great smother and great team work assisted Finn Craig to snap a right
foot over the shoulder Fev like goal. The Swans kicked a goal in response, followed by another goal to take
the lead. Quinn Olnyk took
possession, ran his full ten metres to Tom Miller who kicked a superb goal from
the pocket to keep the visitors in touch.
At half time our coach Condon explained
that the Mosman Swans had most of the play and we’re not holding our positions, we want the centre to hold
the ball and not flood the backline. We need to run as far as we can get and look for a target!
Third quarter
Dante Negri kicked out from the centre to
Lachie Shannon in forward pocket , to Quinn then to Robbie Wallace who scored a
tremendous goal. Stefano took a
great mark and Thomas Kenyon and Andrew Blaher were in the thick of the pack
helping to get the ball out and Charlie Nadenbousch put in great team effort
shepherding and passing well out
of the back line.
At three quarter time our coach made a
Churchillian speech. “Not- ‘we will fight them on the beaches’
but, ‘hold your positions well, we have all come here to win so we need you to
run as hard as you can”. AND THEY DID.
SCORE | EM: 6:1 | MS: 5.3
Fourth Quarter
What followed was a good example of a young
side whose coach has got them on the right track! The boys were on fire, Finn Craig had an uncanny ability to
use his body and Daniel Condon created some avenues up front. Lachie Shannon took a great mark,
and there were some Finn Parker was also excellent for East Malvern running off
half forward while Quinn and Dante set up the win midfield.
East Malvern refused to be broken and
classy play by James McCormack kicked another goal. The
play was fierce and Lachie Shannon took a great contested mark to and kicked
another point as did Chris Antil kicking from the boundary line to hit the post
then through the middle for another point. Anthony Blaher worked hard to get a result and James
McCormack had a few touches and
was sensational.
FINAL SCORE | EM: 39
points to MS: 28 points.
The boys
were tremendous today it was a great effort to come up to Sydney and return
with the prize under the leadership of Coach Condon and to top it off we will
play the Mosman Swans again here next year – on our home ground. Can we win again? BRING IT ON!
