MATCH REPORT – Rd9 2010
EAGLES BLACK DAY AT MULLUM MULLUM
By Peter Booth
SENIORS FINAL SCORE
NORWOOD 19-16-130 def VERMONT 8-18-66
A fine, cold and slippery day for this important game against a team below us. We made 4 changes with Siciliano, Della’Quilla, T.Bird and Aaron Mullett coming in for Papillo(overseas), Frankish(holidays), McLure(inj) and Griffiths dropped.
Dean Waller had hoped to resume in the reserves but is still a week or two away. Tim Johnson is doubtful for the year and Fletcher Stewart resumed after injury in the reserves.
Our only 30 seconds of joy for the whole day came at the start of the game when we got the centre break and Froud goaled. From then on our game was riddled with mistakes and turnovers. We were freaked out by their half back and centre zone which caused us to panic and give up the ball. Their game plan and coaching was impeccable. Norwood kicked the next 5 goals to lead at ¼ time 5-3 to 1-2. We had 17 turnovers in the 1st term.
After the break Norwood kicked 4 goals to sew up the match – we appeared rattled and frustrated but right on the siren Millhouse goaled. Better players for the half were Mullett, Bardon, Mendes and Henley. Mullett and Bardon seemed to share the ball a lot. At 1/2 time they led 9-10 to 2-5.
We were more competitive in the 3rd quarter despite Norwood kicking the first 2 goals. From that point we added 1-8 to 3 behinds but just could not convert. Kelly kicked our only goal. At ¾ time they led 11-13 to 3-13.
We kicked 5-5 in the last quarter but they responded with 8-3. Greig pretty much summed up our day when he hit the post from 2 metres out but to his credit he kicked 2 goals for the term. Della’Quilla also kicked two goals but he showed encouraging signs in his general play which will earn him another senior game next week. Henley capped off a useful game with a goal. There were several spot fires in the last quarter as our frustration showed but the opposition were too good on the day. Better players for the half were Mullett, Bardon, Cotchett, Henley and Millhouse.
Goalkickers – Greig 2, Della’Quilla 2 with singles to Froud, Henley, Millhouse and Kelly.
Best Players – R.Mullett, Bardon, Henley, Cotchett, Mendes, Ross and Millhouse.
Possessions – Mullett 36, Bardon 34, Henley 23. Millhouse 19, Mendes 18 and Ross 18.
1% - Ross 11, A.Mullett 10 and Cotchett 5. We had 56 turnovers compared to our match average of 43.
Coach’s Comments – We fought it out in the 2nd half when I thought we had a dip.We had a season high of turnovers. They chipped and found targets – it was a dark and black day for our footy club.
RESERVED FINAL SCORE
NORWOOD 13-8-86 def VERMONT 6-13-49
We got off to a bad start with Norwood kicking 4-3 to 5 behinds in the first quarter. McDonald goaled early in the 2nd term after a good tackle by Bordin. Scoring was difficult. Norwood goaled but when Jones goaled we were close enough if good enough. At ½ time they led 5-3 to 2-5.
We really had a sniff when Parker goaled after the break but that was short lived when Norwood answered with 4 more. To the boys credit they fought back late in the quarter when Jones rolled in a long shot followed by goals from McInerney and Siakavelis. We were only 19 points down at ¾ time 10-4 to 6-9. Geraghty, Rogneda, Jones and McInerney were playing well.
The last quarter was an arm wrestle for 17 minutes until Norwood kicked 3 goals to seal our fate.
Goalkickers – Jones 2 with singles to Siakavelis, McDonald, Parker and McInerney.
Coach’s Best Players – Rogneda, Geraghty, Siakavelis, Smith and Jones.
Coach’s Comments – We got a lesson by a club who is up and about. We were flat in the rooms before the game. They gave us a lesson in desire and how to use the footy.
C OLTS FINAL SCORE
NORWOOD 10-14-74 def VERMONT 6-7-43
The colts start mirrored the two later games with Norwood kicking 4 goals to nil in the first quarter. Their teamwork and disposal in the wet conditions was far superior to ours. We were better in the 2nd term and after 7 minutes Thompson goaled via Sonsie after a patient build up. Norwood replied then Williams missed a badly needed goal on the siren. At half time they led 5-3 to 1-5.
We certainly had the better of the 3rd quarter. Barry-Murphy goaled via Woolard and when McAuley goaled it was game on. When Williams goaled via Barry-Murphy we trailed by just 3 points. There was great jubilation when Williams goaled again this time via Thompson and we hit the front. Norwood rallied by kicking several behinds before a late goal gave them a 9 point lead at ¾ time 6-9 to 5-6.
Strachan kicked the first goal of the last quarter but just like Blackburn the opposition kicked the next 4 goals. I made some personal notations during the course of the game which included – predictable kick ins – no talking – no mateship or enthusiasm.
Goalkickers – Williams 2 with singles to Strachan, Thompson, Barry-Murphy and McAuley.
Coach’s Best Players – Symes, Burmeister, Gannon, Williams, Davidson and Mendes.
Coach’s Comments – It was really disappointing. Too many players thought it would just happen. The fitness of some players is a worry. We didn’t bring our game plan to the game.
