The Tradelink Western Magpies came up against a Broadbeach team strengthened by no less than 5 Gold Coast FC players who played in the QAFL this week courtesy of the VFL bye and proved too strong running out 20.12.132 to 13.10.88 over the Magpies.
The cats took the opportunity with the extra strength provided by the GCFC inclusions to play Dane Zorko forward which had a devastating impact as he kicked 12 goals as a permanent small forward beating a number of opponents tried on him. The slick Cats kicked six goals in all of the first 3 quarters and the Magpies battled hard but could not get the score on the board in the first half.
James Rozynski was the only Magpie to not have a week off leading into the game and was his usual hard at everything and everyone self and battled hard all day giving the Magpies drive into the forward line. His performance would have impressed Country Queensland Selectors as he staked an early claim for a final 25 spot for the Australian Country Championships.
Conrad Hudghton was outstanding on the half back flank and as a result received the R10 nomination for the QAFL NAB Rising Star Award and a recall into the U/18 Queensland State Team for the final two games of the U/18 National Championships.
Ed McDonnell was once again strong in defense placed under constant pressure all game. Mark Dowley continued his resurgence following his return after 18 months out of the game keeping Nathan Ablett quiet in the first half and kicked 3 goals when released forward in the back end of the game. Callum Carseldine was a solid contributor in his second QAFL game as his hardness in the contest was a feature. Luke Scott was once again lively up forward and finished with 3 goals.
Coach Jarrod Thorpe would have once again been encouraged by his teams willingness to never give up and especially winning the last quarter kicking 5 goals to the Cats 2. He will also have been happy with a spread of 9 goal kickers and for the third time in a row under his control scoring over 10 goals in a match.

The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves were also faced with a bolstered Cats line up as 5 players were dropped back strengthening the winless Reserves Team. It was a very tight contest for 3 quarters with multiple lead changes as both sides wrestled for momentum but neither being able to establish a significant advantage.
It was a 6 goal to 1 last quarter burst from the Magpies which blew the Cats out of the water. Drew Mitchell was outstanding all day driving the Magpies forward well supported by Peter Kilroy off half back pushing up on to the wing and Dom Beer in the Ruck. Kale Reed kicked 6 goals and Matt Thompson slotted 5 in a very effective double act. Conrad Lavey was once again very good through the middle and later in the game in a back pocket. The final score 16.9.105 to 10.16.76 in a vital win in terms of securing an inside run in the finals race.

The Westside Asphalt U/18 Western Magpies missed a golden opportunity to secure top spot in the Sports Ready U/18 Division 1 competition with a disappointing 7.9.51 too 12.15.76 loss to Redland at home on Sunday. The young Magpies did have some personnel missing and two players backing up from topping up with the Lions on Saturday but coach Des Lashamn would not have been happy with a competitive first half followed by an uncharacteristic second half fade out.
As a result the young Magpies failed to consolidate top spot on the ladder and sit third on percentage sharing 28 Premiership points with first placed Mt Gravatt and second placed Labrador both of whom have a game in hand on the Magpies. The competition is very tight with the next 5 teams all on 24 Premiership Points.
