Well the song got sung once on the weekend with the school First XVIII taking the cookies against Carey on Friday. Well done boys. There were mixed feelings about the results for the seniors.
After an even first quarter, the second was the exact opposite. Unfortunately it wasn't what the doctor (and there would have been plenty at the Uni) ordered as we failed to score at all for the 25 minutes. The home side on the other hand put on six goals five and it really could have been anything as we lost our way. So the throng wondered which way we would go. It could be a long afternoon or would thee be some resolve from the troops.
Well we saw some resolve with the Mighty Bloods bouncing back to kick seven goals to one for the quarter. Al Johnston got some important clearances, Laz was getting more of the pill and the backline began to fill those holes. But there was also the Vossy factor. Five goals for the quarter in what will have to go down as one of the greatest quarters played in the magenta and black. The second, when he literally "bounced" off the opposition backmen, was a piece of brilliance. The hosts were bewildered by this display and we were well and truly back in the game. It appeared to be a completely different side that went into the sheds but the throng were excited.
The last quarter started with much expectation and after a bit of an arm wrestle for five minutes, young Critta grabbed the ball on the outer wing, and with Franklinesk type skills banged home the first goal for the quarter which saw us hit the front for the first time since very early in the match. Again the next five minutes were a bit of a wrestle and unfortunately played on the other side of the ground. Lethargy was beginning to set in and a few crucial turnovers proved costly. Ultimately the efforts of the third quarter took their toll and with Vossy being covered by 23 Blacks defenders, they were able to stop our momentum and run out victors by 25 points. Difficult to know what to take out of the as once again one bad quarter cost us four points. But on the other hand, the fight and resolve needs to be acknowledged and while the boys continue to demonstrate those traits, the punters will be happy.
Results in other games continue to show the evenness of the competition and while this was four points lost against a lower side, there will be plenty of opportunities to redeem ourselves.

The Reserves put up a sound effort for three quarter but ultimately their efforts against the top side counted for little as Blacks remained undefeated. Sec was back to his niggling best and resurrected the torpedo which must have gone 300 metres. Macca was good and Liam Donnelly got through his first game for the year which is promising.
Despite the scoreline, there were still these positives.

The U/19s ventured to Waverley Park and took on a cocky De La side. But led by Kingy, Steeny, Rhys McMurray and a band of schoolies, the boys went done with a fight. Indeed they had their opportunities but need to get back into the winning habit.
As mentioned the school side scored a resounding victory over Carey. It was a tight struggle for most of the day, although you always felt we would pul away. Pinot, Bradie Seccull, Corrigan and Conte went up a gear in the last quarter and it proved to be an excellent victory.
This weekend we take on St Kevins OB and Collegians at McKinnon.
