Last Friday night the Roos pulled of a magic act and performed one of the best escape acts of the season.
After getting off to a lightning start in the first quarter the Dingoes dragged the Roos back through a stronger commitment to win the loose ball. By half way through the first quarter it was obvious that the Dingoes had brought their A game.
The Roos where well supported by Bryce Marshall and Mark Storey, while the evergreen Craig Stewart and Mick McFarlane where damaging for the Dingoes.
The Dingoes came out hard in the second quarter and gained control of the game through their hard working midfield and competitive forward line. The Roos struggled to answer the challenge and if not for the stand out performances of Marshall, Bigley and Matata the Roos would have been in real trouble. At half time the Dingoes were up by 4 points.
After a tense half time break the Roos were asked to take responsibility for their indifferent performance and responded to the challenge. The Roos work rate lifted and a number of players took a more committed approach to the contested football. Murray Lovett was again given a tag role and nullified McFarlane while Chas Haesler was superb and continually put himself in harm’s way to set the example. Bigley continued to be dangerous up forward and Colin Mark’s defensive pressure was having an impact. At three quarter time the Roos had a narrow 2 point lead.
The final quarter was set up to be an epic struggle with the Dingoes sniffing an upset. The last 20 minutes was intense contest played between the two half backlines. Mike Langer had injected himself into the game and was providing a good option through the middle of the ground. Haesler was unstoppable for the Roos and was well supported by a menacing Matata. However it was the Dingoes that hit the front in a frantic last quarter and looked to have upset in their sights.
Enter Roos Canadian rookie Andrew Redelmeier. Redelmeier swooped and a loose ball 30 metres out from the Roos gaols and banged it through to give the Roos back the lead with just under 2 minutes on the clock. The Roos were able to hang on for a very hard fought 3 point win against a gallant but disappointed Dingoes.
