Half a dozen of one
and six of the other to Tinka and you have to ask yourself how many gets you BOG? Smithy has been using Tinka in a
forward/onballer role given the riches we have in the roving department, and he
proved to be no dummy full forward this week, with three in the first quarter,
two in the second, five in the third and two in the ultimate stanza. Amazingly
three were from free kicks, and one of Liam Patrick’s goals was a downfield
free after Tink was flattened – maybe the umpires are now protecting those who
attack the ball in time honoured fashion. Throw in five behinds on our
reckoning, a handball assist to Patrick for another of his four, and some
general play touches and you have some reasonable footy stats for an
afternoon’s work.
While muttering
something about his club record of a Baker’s dozen sausage rolls a few years
back, club patron and first ever registered player, Percy Baker, was flicking
his live cigarette butts at Tinka as he brought up double digits, Percy’s
vehemence may have been misplaced as according to other old heads, a rooster
named Wayne Walker bagged 14 a few years back (Percy reckons his thirteen six
on the day is equivalent to 14). Whatever, Tinka’s twelve is probably a State League record for a Broadbeach
player.
It wasn’t all roses
however, as the Maggies fought back and outscored us in the second half. Not
good enough in a circumstance when we should have over run the opposition. In
the second quarter we felt that our game was not quite that required to take on
the competition leaders. We felt the team were not playing with the intense
forward pressure, fast and low ball movement, disciplined set-ups, and verve
that characterised the win over Mt Gravatt. And while it appeared we had it
under control, in fact we were making some lousy decisions and missing a
significant amount of targets off the boot through the midfield and into the
forward set up. The dominance of the back six, R-Pants around the ground, Tom
Nicholls in the ruck and pushing up, Macca’s pace and Tinka’s day out, somewhat
disguised our performance. The mind boggles as to what the margin should have
been at half time. Our collective relaxation and the Magpies perseverance
certainly found us out in the second half.
The side lined up as
selected with our interest on Searly in the middle and on unseen GCFC players Patrick
and Jolly. All three made good contributions but Searly spent most of his time
down back in between experimental deployments to centre stoppages – he really
is a remarkable judge of ball movement and positional anticipation.
Hayden Jolly has a handy
build and slotted in nicely and you would have thought he’d played with our
blokes on a number of occasions. Good off the foot and active in the midfield,
he was responsible for some of the better ball movements into our forward zone.
Liam Patrick picked up four and looked to take a few big’uns but had to watch
as Quickie took the honours in that department for the day, (one particularly
fine example in the last stanza), with Mossy also showing some strength in the
air and unknown or previously unseen pace wearing a Cats jumper.
R-Pants was a live
wire around the ground and clearly got inside someone’s skin when a Maggie was
reported for striking him, or at least that’s what we heard the umpire say but
we couldn’t find Pants. Then he turns up on the pine – reckon he might have
made a fast clever strategic retreat. He displays a certain excitement when
around the ball and is very fast across the ground for a bloke whose bum is
built close to the deck.
Speaking of pace,
someone should take Macca on as a candidate for the Stawell Gift. He is quick,
very quick, and has that rare gift to accelerate at will, bounce on the run and
still find the energy to dispose effectively.
In the second and
final stanzas, Smithy’s Space – a paddock between centre and goal squares – was
clearly evident and used by the likes of Pants, SOD and Squizz. It was a chess
game following the deployments around this space of Cookie, Stalk, Jacko and
Tom Nicholls through the ruck, centre half forward and centre half back. Go the
flexibility, including the move of Rhino up front who had a couple of chances
in the last, but unlike the previous game v the Maggies, lacked accuracy.
Good to see Stalk put
one through, (during a game), assisted by the Rolfe brothers. Only proper that
he should figure in the stats in his 150th game and more
importantly, celebrate with a win. Throw in Rusty’s 21st
celebrations and it was, more than likely, very ugly in the clubrooms late
Saturday night!
There was a confusing
period during the final quarter when the adjudicators couldn’t or didn’t appear
to get their act together. Following a point scored by the Maggies and the
resultant kick-in, one of the men in orange called a free hit to the Maggies
and requested the sherrin at centre half forward. The other gentleman called
for the kick/bounce? at the top of the goal square, then it was called back to
centre half back. We didn’t know what the kick was for and we are ignorant of
the situation that allows a kick from the centre half back position. But as our
very own umpire’s advisor puts it “you don’t have to have a long neck to be a
goose!”
Riddle: How much is a GCFC? Answer: Half a Tinka. Will he get an invitation?
Magoos
Seesaw game in the
curtain raiser that was set at three quarter time for a nail biter with the
Maggies leading by one point. If the game pattern was to continue the
expectation was a Cats victory. Unfortunately the other mob saluted the judge –
through superior accuracy and fitness - and we are yet to sing the song this
season.

Could be a big crowd in to catch the Special K next week for reportedly his only outing in Queensland in 2010. Be there early for our Magoos and Seniors who will provide the dew kickers and curtain raiser entertainment versus Morningside.
