After a positive week for the boys and a top win vs
Monash Blues, we were excited to get another win on the board and build
some
momentum into the week off. We started well and were able to build a
small
lead over NOBs, being up 4 points at quarter time and 8 points at the
main
break. Unfortunately, this is where our run stopped.
The second half was certainly not our best for the year.
Unfortunately this game carried on what has been our story for much of
the
season so far – able to start strong but not finish off, and unable to
play our best football for 4 quarters. We all know that, when playing
our
best, we will be very hard to beat!!
During the week off, the boys have been working hard both
on and off the track, with a review of the season to date completed.
The
playing group have come up with a number of areas for improvement and
have
begun to address these over the last few weeks. So far we have seen
some
heartening signs, but the real challenge will be showing what we can do
against
Mentone at Friar Park on Saturday. We’re excited to be back at home,
and
hope to see you down there for some very important Friar support!
Go Friars, Stephen.

We started slowly with North Old Boys kicking the first 3
goals, allowing them to take the lead at quarter time. By not running
the
footy, we weren’t able to take the game – which our game style is
built around – and our use of the footy was poor.
We went in 3 points down at halftime, a tight 3rd quarter saw us get our
nose
in front at the last break though hard running and better use of the
footy.
During the last quarter, NOBs were able to get control at the stoppages
as well
as first hand on the footy. 3 goals to them and 0 goals to us meant
NOBs ran
out winners by 16 points.
Looking forward to a big effort from the boys after the
week off, and to playing back on our turf at Whitefriars. Hope to see
you
there!

We travelled out to Ivanhoe to play them for the second
time this year. In the first encounter we were beaten by 152 points and
our
performance was not our best for the year. That occasion was Old
Ivanhoe’s only win for the season so far, and given they were in the
same
boat as us they also seeked relegation.
We had our best 1st Qtr for the year and were right in
the game. After kicking the first goal of the second we were in front
and
playing solid footy. Unfortunately there was 20 min period after this
goal
where our intensity and hard running stopped – we could not get our
hands
on the footy and they were able to kick 8 unanswered goals.
At half time we made a few moves to stop there ball
winners, l asked for Berkley and Dibar to do a job on two of their very
talented and speedy runners. To their credit, they were fantastic at
their
jobs. The third quarter was becoming like the second with them kicking
unanswered goals but to our boys credit they did not drop their heads
and if we
could have kicked straight we would have been a lot closer.
At three quarter time l set the task of outscoring them
in the last quarter and what a last quarter it was!! The heavens opened
up and
all of a sudden with the rain came our best football for the year. The
boys
were first in for the ball and ran the ball with great skill in the
wet. We
kicked 6 goals in the last quarter and also took a lot of encouragement
out of
the game, turning a 152 point margin into a 47 point margin. Now that
the
boys have found this type of belief, a win is not too far away. Thanks
to Chris
Stafford for all his help, as well as to all the other helpers on the
day.

No match report for our 3rds this weekend...despite them
being our only team to notch up a win! Special mention to Shagga Malone
with
his special 9 goal effort over the weekend. Big match for the
boys this
week against Oakleigh, and hopefully an opportunity to notch up another
win and
gain some momentum as we head towards the business end of the season.

It was always going to be tough for the
4ths this week coming up against the undefeated ladder leaders in Old
Essendon. To the boys’ credit, we started off very competitive and had a
good first half. Matt Shanks and Simon Gray worked really hard in the
middle
of the ground as did Matt Sammatino playing his first full game in the
ruck.
Lachlan Lawson gave the highlight of the day with a beautiful banana on
the run
from the boundary line and Dylan Hart was doing a fine job down back.
With a 4
goal deficit going in to the main break we thought if the opposition
started to
think about the week off and if we had a bit of luck we might be in with
a
chance to come over the top of them.
The second half started OK with Heath
Fulton able to snag his second goal for the game, but from that point
Old
Essendon lifted their intensity and we were unable to match them. All
the
boys fought hard for the entire game never giving in, but in the end we
were
beaten by a very good side.
With a week off, we will come back fresh
and hungry to get another win on the board and build some momentum for
the
second half of the year.
Go Friars, Dan Tucker
