Blue skies and sunshine have greeted us after our trip down south to the Illawarra, and North Dalton Oval was looking a treat as the Bombers took on the Lions.
The under 18s were up first, and it took less than a minute for the first goal to get on the board. It was the start of a solid run, as the Bombers looked clearly superior around the ground in the first half. At the long break, the Bombers held a 37-point lead.
Wollongong were determined, but the young Bombers continued to work hard in the third quarter. The Bombers, despite kicking into the wind, won the quarter and led by 44 points at the last change. By now the game was safe, and the Bombers were content to sit on the lead for the last quarter and concentrate their energies on next week's match. The win keeps the Bombers on top of the ladder.
Final Score - North Shore 13.13 (91) defeated Wollongong 8.11 (59)
Next up was the reserve grade side, and the first quarter was tight and tough. It was a low-scoring and even contest, with just 4 scoring shots apiece, but the Bombers' greater accuracy gave them the edge by 5 points at quarter time. After the break, the floodgates opened. Kicking with the wind in the second term, the Bombers dominated proceedings and with 7 unanswered goals the lead was stretched to 54 points at the long break.
But the Bombers were unable to capitalise on their advantage in the third term, as Wollongong fought gamely. Seemingly content to defend the lead into the wind, the Bombers took a 44 point lead into the last change. Bringing fresh legs on for the last quarter, and coming home with the wind, the Bombers went on with the job in the last quarter to extend the final winning margin over 10 goals and ensure the First Division side would remain in the top 5 for the week.
Final Score - North Shore 15.21 (111) lead Wollongong 7.6 (48)
It was a struggle early for our senior side against a committed Wollongong outfit. Evan Davis kicked the opening goal early, but the Bombers struggled to adapt to the conditions and it wasn't until the dying seconds of the quarter that Teddy Strudwick marked in the square to level the scores at quarter time. But as was the case in the reserves game, the pendulum swung firmly North Shore's way in the second term. A glut of possession around the ground and six unanswered goals put the Bombers 39 points clear at the long break.
It was more of the same in the third term, the Bombers in complete control. Six more goals were to follow, with a dominance in possession around the midfield; and despite a late Wollongong goal the Bombers led by 70 points at the last change. With the game safe, the Bombers were content to put their cue in the rack for the last quarter and Wollongong salvaged some pride; but the final result was a comfortable 54-point win for the Bombers. The Bombers now have a 2-game break ahead of 5th place.
Final Score - North Shore 15.14 (104) v Wollongong 7.8 (50)
