Division 1 Report: A large crowd in attendence on Friday night to witness what the the "Phantom and Jean Grey" had highlighted as the match of round. Both teams looking to show the Toronto Eagles that they would challenge them for the OAFL crown. The Broadview Hawks were quick to move the ball into their forward line from the first bounce where it was quickly rebounded by the Kangaroos strong back 6. The ball headed towards a revamped forward line where former club coach Emile Studham was making his first appearence for the year. A strong mark and goal by Studham not only marked his return but got the Roos on the board first. At the other end the Roos backline was working well keeping the attacking Hawks at bay with full back Ben Watts wearing gun Hawk Nick Butterworth like a new pair of boxer shorts. The Roos big men Manny Matata and Jeff Wingrove were dominent in ruck prviding Bryce Marshall, Mark Story, and Murray Lovett some quality ball and thats how the roos got their 2nd goal after some good midfield pressure creating a turnover and getting the ball to Travis McKenzie who goaled. From the following ball up the ball went forward to where there was bad collision between rebounding Roo Jeff Reid and Hawk Richard Mintz resulting in the Hawk being taken from the field with what both club doctors described as a significant lower leg injury. The whole of the Etobicoke club wish Richard a speedy and quick recovery.
At the 1st break scores were level 2.1.13 a piece.
Following the lengthy delay the Roos were looking to continue their 1st term form while the Hawks would now have the added inspiration with the absence to Richard Mintz. In what would be a battle between the the 2 defences it was a veteran and a rookie that would provide the this writer with the ingredients for the story for this 20 minutes of play. New recruit Andrew Boyce who had missed the first 4 games with a groin injury was finally let loose on the fiels and he didn't dissappoint playing across half forward picking up many possesions and delivering accurately to Chris Haesler who goaled while Justin Rigney also back after a hamstring injury provided spring from across the center with his long penetrating kicks always hitting a target. The other goal for this quarter was kicked by Emile Stduham who now had 2 for the day. A close battle with the Hawks up by 1 point.
After a cracker jack 1st half of football between the 2 sides that was only seperated by 1 point what would the 2nd half hold and who would come out on top.
Etobicoke seemed to hold the advantage in the ruck and thru the midfield but the Hawks were full of run and winning the contested football on the ground. Big Manny Matata was dominate in the center square and was now starting to take grabs around the ground bringing his small men of Adam Paterson and Murray Lovett into the contest. Things went back and forth until Mike "I Wanna Be Like Mike" Langner did the old, go around one, baulk a 2nd and kick a Grand final type inspirational goal to lift the Roos. This shift in momentum was what we need as we kicked 2 more for the 3rd thru the Alex McDonald who ran on brillantly to a Studham handball and Travis McKenzie who goaled after a good lead and mark. The Roos had the lead by 9 points.
With the light fading a quick 3/4 time break was called for by the umpires and that what the Roos wanted to keep momentum in their favour. Coach Curran asked his boys for commitment at the contested footy and thats what he got expecially from Bryce "Tucky" Marshall and Murray Lovett who continued the spark that the boys played with for 3 quarters. Goals to Emile Studham x 2 who took an absolute gem of a one hander and a goal on the run from Jono Elliott gave the Roos the much needed breathing space after a dogged affair that left them with nothing in the tank at the end.
The Roos by 29 points and great team peformance by all with their attack on the footy.
