1st Grade – Belconnen Magpies beat Eastlake 109 to 92
Belconnen Magpies took on a Eastlake outfit fresh from a weekend off while our boys were probably a little fatigued from a hard slog against Queanbeyan the week prior. BMFC started strongly and got out to an early 2 goal lead before the first ¼ ended in a stalemate with us holding the barest of margins at the break. The second ¼ was another arm wrestle in which we skipped away with the first goals of the quarter only to be reeled in and share the spoils at half time. For a second week in a row, we were the victim of some very accurate kicking in which Eastlake were 9.2 at half time to our 8.8. BMFC were controlling the ball, making the running and dominating possession only to have Eastlake still in the contest with accurate kicking. We possibly could have applied more pressure and had Eastlake taking shots from tighter angles but overall we were happy with our ball usage, just not the pressure we were applying when they had the footy.
The third quarter saw two game changing incidents being 1) an ugly mêlée on the grandstand wing which involved players from both clubs, BMFC were awarded the free kick from the in suing play and took the ball away and posted a goal. 2) a broken leg to our Full Forward Andrew Ainger. Andrew has been battling of late with a tendonitis related injury so the weeks off will assist with his recuperation from this ailment, and hopefully have back in time for finals. The loss of Andrew, galvanised our playing group after the ugly melee and we posted 4 quick goals to break the game open. Our winners started to stretch their legs, and the likes of Matt Viney, Sav Coate, Chris York all started to put a gap in between us and our opponents and we used the footy well and ran out deserved winners.
2nd Grade – Belconnen Magpies beat Eastlake 91 to 56
The BMFC Reserve grade continued its success with a 5 goal win over Eastlake on Sunday. With a very young side, 12 players 18 years of age or younger, they withstood a very determined Eastlake in the first 10min of the game. With constant pressure they were able to create turnovers and punished the opposition accordingly going into the first break up by 3 goals. The second quarter turned into an arm wrestle with each team going goal for goal for majority of the quarter. At the main break the scores were BMFC 7-6 to Eastlake 3-4. A few positional changes at half time saw the BMFC come out and dominate the quarter with good skills and quick ball into the forward 50. Our backline were once again very good and held them to only 1 goal while we kicked 4 goals 5. A real good opportunity existed in putting them away in the final quarter however to Eastlake’s credit they got first use of the ball out of the centre kicking 3 quick goals. Their momentum was stopped through some good work by Daniel Jordan and Mal Douglas in middle getting first use of the footy and putting it into our forward 50. Even though we were outscored in the quarter 4 goals to 2, it was an impressive performance from a young side that had done the hard work earlier to remain 5 goals up at the final siren. Best players were Anthony Whittard, Mal Douglas, Brendan Dess and Rueben Towill. Major goal scorers were Eckersley(4), Towill(2), Hodder(2) and Posch(2).
3rd Grade – Belconnen Magpies beat Eastlake 127 to 58
The Belconnen Magpies had a lot to play for on Sunday 6 June. A win against Eastlake would cement a position in the top 4 with the half way point of the season just around the corner. Equally, a win was the only way to celebrate the huge personal milestone being achieved by respected player and BMFC legend Paul “Netto” Netting, as he was given the honour of leading the 3s out to battle in his 300th club game. A fine achievement, racked up after 20 odd seasons with the black white and teal, Netto was greeted with an impenetrable banner and a huge gathering of friends and family to help him celebrate the occasion.
The first quarter was dominated by the Pies, but unfortunately the dominance was not echoed on the scoreboard, with 6 behinds scored without a goal. The Demons made the most of their inside 50s and managed to score on each occasion, finishing the quarter at 2.2.14. The forward line pressure was present, as the ball spent the majority of the quarter locked in the Magpies half of the ground, but we failed to capitalise on the many opportunities that presented in front of goal. Collo was pleased with the endeavour at quarter time, but reiterated the need for goals up forward and extra pressure across the middle and back. The second quarter saw a change in attitude in front of the goals from the Pies, and a 6 goal quarter with only 4 behinds was a vast improvement of the first stanza. An amazing running goal from the mercurial captain just before the half time siren saw the pies enter the long break with a slight lead.
The second half was dominated by Belconnen. Another 6 goal quarter in the third really set up the win for the Pies. Cainy was superb as the big body across half forward and his second efforts were creating many thrusts forward. Netto was damaging across half back, and the midfield were well on top of their direct opponents. Buzzy was great in his return game, and Dawso was also welcomed back with his overhead marking up forward and down back creating many opportunities for his team mates. JBR finally got his goal kicking boots on and started to slot the ball between the big sticks. Superior fitness helped the Pies further extend their lead in the last, running out 69 point winners by the final siren. It was good to finish a game with players on the bench, although Dunny’s sore jaw from a love tap and Jacko not knowing what day it was from a high hit probably ruled them out as fit players! Calvo was again a ball magnet around the ground, and our new full forward Ben Power was fantastic in his new role (just ask him).
4th Grade – Belconnen Magpies had the bye
Under 18’s beat Eastlake 82 to 37
The Belconnen U18s played Eastlake at Manuka Oval on Sunday in what was an opportunity to secure a top 2 spot on the ladder. Every player that took the field contributed in the end result. Once again the slippery conditions at 9.30am made it very difficult for early scoring. The lads once again got off to a solid start kicking 5 goals to 2 in the 1st Quarter. Goals through 2 Jordan Harper, Alex Richens, Jacob Taylor and Adin Pini provided the perfect start. With elevation Of Tom Madsen and Daniel Jordan to the senior ranks the lads responded in a positive manner. Lachie Harper, Dominic Duncan and Jarrod McKinnon continued to win many contested ball through the midfield and provided many of our forward thrusts into our 50m area. Shannon Goodsell and Vineel Dutt continue to ruck tirelessly to great effect. The backline lead by Andrew Couir, Brad Posch and Albert Hogan continue to play solid hard noise football keeping out many scoring chances the Eastlake team had. A final term lapse was the only area that will need improving if we are to be a good side over the coming weeks. The lads have a short week to prepare for this weeks game against Queanbeyan on Thursday night. The game promises to provide the ingredients of a great contest between two sides that are aiming for a top 2 spot.
Women’s Team beat Queanbeyan 122 to 0
We played Queanbeyan in perfect conditions at Jamison. It took us a while to get going in the 1st quarter but 3 goals was still good. We had plenty of the ball but didn't pick good options going into attack and blew some good chances. The second quarter was better with 6 goals and lots of run. Kim Coventry and Karina Bailie both had daring runs with the ball. The third quarter was terrific we kicked 5 goals and Kate Chapman shone at full forward. Clare Gough, Gen Netting and Elise O'Dea were all at their brilliant best. The high marking was a feature. Allison White marked well at centre half back. The last quarter was good with 4 goals and a good end to the game. Heather Anderson and Liz Howell were really impressive across half back. Nicole Woods and Amy Jason-Jones had terrific games both in the ruck and up forward. Jo Foster and Karen Dunn both kicked goals and started to show some form. All in all a great confidence booster with some hard games coming up.
