Hi to all our fantastic sponsors and supporters,
Last weekend we hosted the Woori Yallock FNC in what can only be described as "good old fashioned Olinda conditions". The Auskickers, U18s & C Graders began the day in absolutely brilliant sunshine, but by the days end, we were all waiting for the snow to fall from the black sky above.
In Netball, the C Graders got the day off to a flyer with a very convincing 30-11 win, which included keeping Woori scoreless in the 3rd Qtr. Our defensive end was brilliant over the 4 Qrts (Bernie Fitz & Caz) and Emily Dunn starred in the Centre. Becky Scott claimed "most spectacular fall" honors. The girls climb back into 3rd spot after a couple of losses. Great Job! In B Grade, a close match was expected and so it proved, going right down to the wire before we just missed out on the chocolates, 25-28. There was much more reward for effort this week with the goalies continuing to improve. A good even spread of players on the day was terrific to see but C-Med, Katey Herzig & Lisa Mac stood out.
Well done girls, a huge improvement on previous weeks. In A Grade, yet another close battle was expected, but it was clear very early on that it was going to be one way traffic. The girls careered away to a 57-22 win, an extremely strong performance all round. Mel Thomas shot her way to 30 goals, brilliantly supported by Lucy Allman. Mel Walter marshaled the troops in a defence that never allowed Woori an inch. A brilliant result and well deserved and terrific reward for really hard work.
In football news, the U18s continued to carve up the competition with a 21 goal win over the Valley Tigers. Alex Policha and Tommy Stalder both finished with 5 goals and were named in the best. The boys continue to sit in top spot undefeated. The Reserves also continued there good form with a solid 10 point win. Brady Schubert finished with 3 goals whilst Stevey G & Gerry Timmermans continue to press for senior selection. Young Mickey Ruigrok also featured in the best. The Reserves have slipped into 3rd spot and are looking very solid. In the seniors, we were trying to knock off the top side for the 2nd week in a row. At Qtr time, we were 1 point behind and playing well. During the 2nd and 3rd Qrts though, we really disappointed our supporters with a poor effort and the game was lost. A much improved last Qtr showed what we can do but the damage was done and we went down by over 8 goals. Gazza McDonald, Dylan Troutman & Pat Rosier again continue to lead the way. The seniors are in 7th spot, only 1 win outside the top 5 but have plenty of work ahead of them in the coming weeks.
Looking around the club at the moment and there are a number of things on the go currently. Rick "Teddy" Wall is working feverishly on improving our current training lights situation (ie: we virtually don't have any). Many thanks for your efforts Rick, when it’s completed, I know it will be greatly appreciated and will make a massive difference. Things are on the improve for Arthur "Choofa" Charteris who is out of hospital after last weeks heart scare. It was also great to see John Faull pop into the clubrooms briefly on Saturday evening. He is still to face major surgery shortly and we hope all goes well and his condition improves in the coming months and years.
The Junior club headed up to our old mates Healesville on the weekend at Queens Park (aaar the memories come flooding back don't they Tooly ?) The U16s & 14s were beaten convincingly against really good opposition whilst the 12s fell short by 15pts.
The U16s, under the guidance of former OFC star defender Marty "Weedy" Rankin, and his sidekick, former OFC star Wingman Grant "Grunta" Faull, hasn’t had the results they were hoping for this year, but continue to work hard and enjoy themselves. The U14s are fairing a little better, sitting in 12th spot but only 2 wins outside the top 6. Former OFC star Geoff "Jack" Horner heads up these charges each week, they are a big chance to make finals and we wish them all well. The U12s, led by yet another former OFC star in Daryl "Bunny" Swanson, are having a terrific year so far, sitting in 6th spot but only 2 wins behind top spot. These guys are a big chance of playing off the big prize. Our U10s were undefeated before the weekend (I haven't heard a score). These kids don't have ladders and finals, but if they did, they would be flag favorites right now. They are just an awesome unit!!!
The juniors have a bye this weekend for the Queens Birthday holiday and are at home the following week against Upwey/Tecoma.
The Senior Club travels away to Wandin FNC this week in a huge day of football and netball. The U18s & C Grade netball kick off the day at 10.30am as per normal.
