The Tradelink Western Magpies were more competitive than the final score would suggest against Morningside in Toowoomba at Heritage Oval on Saturday as the reigning premiers ran out 26.16.172 to 11.8.74 winners.
The Magpies started the game well getting their hands on the ball early and moving it quickly forward for Jye Spencer to snap the first goal of the game. The Magpies however did not capitalize on their early dominance into a stiff breeze and wasted some opportunities. Morningside capitalized on their run of momentum slamming on four goals through the middle of the quarter proving the difference between the teams at the first break 7.4 to 3.2.
The second quarter was a very competitive affair as both teams grappled with each other and the tricky conditions and a 10 minute break as two Morningside players were removed from the ground after clashing with each other to take no further part in the game. During this term Gerard Moore was holding his own against the experienced Jacob Gough while James Rozynski and Chris Mihalopoulos were working very hard through the midfield and Mark Dowley and Ed McDonnell controlled the air in defense. The feeling was the Magpies were well in the game at half time with Morningside holding a 27 point lead.
The third term was one the Magpies would rather forget as the Morningside small brigade ran riot through the middle of Heritage Oval sharing the ball precisely with handball gaining quick entry into the forward line where the forwards marked in space and kicked accurately. The Magpies under pressure reverted to old habits and spent most of the quarter breaking down on the far wing and across CHF and paid the ultimate price for turning the ball over in those areas. When the three quarter siren sounded the game was beyond the Magpies on the back of a 9.4 to 0.0 romp by the reigning premiers.
In 2009 and perhaps earlier this season such a dominance at ¾ time would result in a 150 pt plus defeat for the Magpies but their resilience, character and determination would have pleased new coach Jarrod Thorpe as they re-engaged in the contest. They were able to put a stop to the third quarter rot and ran out the game kicking 5.2 to 7.4 in the final quarter and keep the margin under 100 points.
Mark Dowley’s performance was his best since returning from injury in only his 4th game back a great sign and Gerard Moore, Ben Jaenke-Cain, Luke Scott and Ed McDonnell did not do their State selection campaigns any harm with their performances. Local lad James Rozynski was great all day and never gave up trying while Greg Lavey worked hard all day through the middle, half back and half forward and finished with 3 goals. Alex Kitching performed well and Callum Carseldine and Tim Colburn showed plenty on debut to suggest that the Magpies have unearthed some more young talent for the future.

The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves have been notoriously slow starters this season but have been able to overcome their opposition in most games but the offer of a 4.5 to 0.1 head start to the Panthers in the first term proved too difficult to overcome. The remaining 3 quarters were very competitive but the Magpies could not manage to change the quarter time margin of 28 points when the final siren sounded.
