In front the biggest crowd seen at Graham Rd for many years, Aspley out tackled the Lions but failed to convert when needed. The Hornets were clearly the better team for the most part of the first half and should have had a commanding lead but failure to convert allowed the Lions to bang on 4 late goals in the second term and go in with a 2 goal lead at half time.
The second half was a terrific display by both teams as the ball continually ran the length of the ground, but it was the Lions who had a key forward and that made all the difference. Aaron Cornelius kicked six goals straight for the Lions while the Aspley players struggled to put scorboard pressure on when they had thier chances.
With 10 minutes left in the game the Hornets were finishing over the Lions and with Bryce Carroll moved to fullforward, there was a glimmer of hope when he marked over the pack to reduce the margin to 10 points.
Unfortunately, in the end the poor conversion rate costs Aspley dearly but there was no doubting the commitment to play out the game and it was a performance that will give them the confidence to kick start the second half of the season.
Dylan Ried and Robbie Copeland were terrific for the home team while Bryce Carroll had another solid performance as he ran off half back to set up many of the Hornets forward thrusts.
Sean Tighe had yet another terrific performance as he continually led up the ground to provide a target.
