Bomber Grammar has always been a difficult place to win at. Funny ground, downhill and fluky winds all mean that irrespective of where the Bombers are on the ladder the match will be a tough one. They won the toss and decided to kick with the wind. They went defensive right from the first bounce with extra men being placed on our forwards. The Bombers got off to great start when Flaherty marked and goaled. Lots of new faces in their team but he’s always been a good player. Good running saw Vossy take a mark and he kicked truly against the 4 goal wind. Browny roved beautifully off the pack and kicked our second. The Skipper then got the ball to Morro who found Vossy who kicked his second. Morro was playing well and so was Al Dog in the ruck, Chis on the wing and Gledhill in defence. Jazz hit the pack hard and Browny’s right foot attempt found an elusive Case in the goal square. He didn’t miss. Nemesis Flaherty was being a pest and he goaled again. Browny then found Laz who spotted Al on a lead and he didn’t let the team down. It was bloody freezing and the bell went at 2.2. to our 5.0.
We were quite static at the beginning of the second stanza. Shutdown Dougy was wearing Flaherty like a second skin and despite the good play from Stowie, Chis and Gledders the Bombers peppered the goals albeit unsuccessfully. Laz burst off his wing and found Case who kicked his second and our only goal for the quarter, the weather deteriorated and the ball seemed stuck on the pavilion wing, Half time couldn’t come soon enough and the scoreboard read 2.6 to our 6.0. Hot dogs were consumed and the rain was close.
The premiership quarter saw Browny snag a point before Essendon get a down the field free to kick their first. Gledders found Morro, who found Fordy in the square. He didn’t miss. Critta was tackling everyone and his good play saw Vossy goal. A few minutes later Fordy converted from a ball up. Case was playing well up forward and he found a busy Frog who kicked a beauty. Hammer was playing really well in defence and Al Dog despite giving away 80 cm was playing a blinder. Morro was full of run and he was rewarded late in the quarter after Combi, Ferg, Dougy and Case all linked up. It was now bloody wet and freezing with the scores reading 4.10 to our 11.2. At three quarter time everyone wanted to come off with timekeeper Forbesy having the driest seat in the house.
The fourth quarter like a trip to the dentist – painful but necessary. Banga celebrated his debut with a Socceroo style goal. The crowd sent nuts – well they would have if they had had use of their hands. Paralysis from the cold had set in and even BOO had taken shelter under a tree. Frog, Chis ad Al were all playing well and when Jazz banged one forward Critta got on the end of it and slotted one home. Game over and time to get out of the rain.
The weird thing was that we kicked 10 goals against the wind and only 3 with it. Strange game footy.
The rain continued to pour down as the Throng descended upon the Bomber Grammar rooms. There had been a long ladies lunch in progress throughout the afternoon and they were really firing as the boys entered the rooms. Best players like Al Dog looked slightly nervous at the prospect of what the best opposition player might win! We turn at the half way mark 6-3 and that we can be proud of. BOO and I took a traveller for 400 km trip home and boy was it wet when we left!
