Roos ruckman Manny Matata started forward with Jeff “Timmy” Wingrove doing the bulk of the ruckwork. Wingrove is a much improved ruckman who gives the Roos on-ball brigade first use of the footy at the stoppages. The Roos back six led by fullback Ben Watts and Vice Captain Adam “Wrong Way” Jacobs repelled the Wildcats forward entries and by quarter time the Roos had jumped out to a 26 point lead.
A more determined Wildcats came out after quarter time and applied plenty of pressure on the Roos. The Wildcats dominated the first half of the second quarter but were unable to convert their hard work on the scoreboard. The Roos finished the second quarter full of running with young gun Riyad Karacic and club veteran Dave Humber providing strong contests and winning hard footy through the middle of the ground. By the half time the Roos had increased their lead to 30 points.
The second half saw the Roos blue chip players’ takeover with Adam Patterson, Murray Lovett and Travis McKenzie dominating the game. The trio collected possessions at will and used the ball to great advantage. Chet Long was dominating across half back and on two occasions beat his opponents when outnumbered two to one. Jeff Reid took a leaf out of the Adam Patterson book of courage and twice smashed the pack to come out the other side with the ball. Logan Chambers, in a best on ground performance, continued to dominate playing a dual role as a go to target up forward and giving the Roos some extra grunt in the middle of the ground. He was able to provide much needed breaks to the hard running Marshall and still win his own football when playing as an on-baller.
Young forward Andrew Redelmeier continued to develop along his steep learning curve and providing the Roos with an additional forward leading target. Redelmeier has shown that he is very close to his break out game if he continues to improve at his current rate.
At the final siren the Roos had knocked up their first victory for the year with a solid 58 point win. Roos coach Steve Curran was very pleased with the overall effort of every player. “It was very difficult to single out best players today; we had such an even contribution from every player. It was great that the guys could send Tommy “Didak” Keith off with a win. He has been a terrific servant of the club and we wish him all the best. I am very happy with the way we competed and played to instruction, it was a terrific effort”.
Curran may have also set a new OAFL record on Saturday with the Roos having 62 interchange rotations during the game.
