This Saturday we acknowledge a milestone achieved by one of Hatherleigh’s favourite sons. Mathew Faulkner will play his 200th A grade game on his home ground against Tantanoola.
Mat, eldest son of Lorraine and Ian Faulkner, has played all his football with the Hatherleigh Eagles. Mat epitomises the true sportsman, his endeavour and passion for the game has brought him respect both on and off the field.
From an early age Mat displayed the skills and understanding of the game which has seen him attain so many accolades including a prized Mail medal in 2001. However for Mat, holding aloft the 2002 Premiership shield, the first of three premierships,
was possibly one his most rewarding sporting moments always putting the teams achievements ahead of his own.
Over the years there have been many offers trying to lure Mat elsewhere, but at no time was he tempted to leave his beloved Eagles. This season Mat has taken on the senior coaching role at Hatherleigh and its members and supporters are rapt with Mat’s endeavour despite their current position on the ladder. Mat is nurturing a group of young footballers with not only their skills but also their overall knowledge of the game and their commitment to the club.
Mat has a way of making everyone feel special; his consideration for the individual is not lost on those who are watching his coaching journey closely.
A fierce competitor on the ground and a humble and loyal club man off the ground, on Saturday we will honour Mat Faulkner for achieving not only his 200th milestone, but for all the success he has achieved and for the powerful example by which he leads.
