The Tradelink Western Magpies under new senior coach Jarrod Thorpe put forward easily the teams best 2010 performance against the Brisbane Lions at Coorparoo on Saturday evening falling short of that first win by 19 points.
The pleasing and encouraging thing for Magpies members and supporters would be the brand of football the Magpies played under Thorpe and the success of his initial personell changes. The Magpies over the past season and a half have been in good positions at 3/4 time and been over run in the last quarter but on this occasion they challenged in the last to get within 2pts at the 12 minute mark, also a step forward.
A longer and more direct game plan outlined by Thorpe from his first address to players last Monday provided for an exciting brand of football by the Magpies which gave a revamped forward structure including Chris Hunt and Jye Spencer playing deep opportunity. Spencer staying at home paid off as he capitalised from more direct forward entries kicking 4 goals for the match while David Hamill (2) and Val Pope (2) were both effective roaming the forward 50. Luke Scott was outsanding in his role pushing further up the ground also finishing with a goal. The forward pressure applied by the Magpies especially in a 10 minute spell at the start of the second quarter was outstanding but could have resulted in more points on the board.
The midfield battle was driven by Gerard Moore dominating the ruck contests which was followed up by Chris Hunt when Moore was rested and the Magpies midfield brigade took advantage. James Rozynski, Richard Wenham, Chris Mahalipoulos, Ben Jaenke-Cain, Zaine Pringle, Chris Judson and Greg Lavey were dynamic all match winning their fare share of clearances and providing strong resistance when the Lions got their hands on the ball first. James Pennycuick was outstanding on a wing winning possesion around half back providing run and carry then pennetrating the foward 50 with his left foot as instructed by coach Thorpe and should have finished with a couple of goals.
The mixture of youth and experience was once again very effective in defence with Ed McDonnell, Tim McEvoy and Mark Dowley providing the backbone while very well supported by Conrad Hudghton, Billy Moorhead, Alex Kitching and Cameron Mitchelhill.
Those loyal Magpies supporters have every reason to be excited by what they saw at Coorparoo on Saturday and the challenge for Thorpe and his chargers is to take these significant gains from his first week forward into an ambush against the reigning Premiers at Toowoomba this Saturday.

The Tradelink Western Magpies Reserves fell agonisingly close to toppling undefeated ladder leaders Southport falling short by 4 points on Saturday morning at Chelmer. The game started in wet and slippery conditions and both teams worked hard as the ball was worked from one end of the ground to the other. Southport were more efficient shooting on goal and went to half time two goals up.
As conditions improved Southport dominated the third term kicking 4.6 while the Magpies were able to keep touch with the ladder leaders kicking two late goals. The Magpies then stormed home in the last quarter 2.2 to 0.2 but ran out of time in what was a quality match between two very good teams.
